860255 2010-02-22 03:28:00 Really? I use an old IDE drive via USB on my Win 7. Never had that kind of weirdness.

Windows is obviously confused.

I'd slave the drive and see what the situation is with it, format it etc then if all that is happy, put it back in the enclosure and try again.

Or maybe the drive is knackered, do you know if it goes?

I can hear the disk (disk platter, is that the term?) starts to spin whenever the power is turned on. The sound that it makes is in concordance to the sound that I have heard when it was being used as an internal HDD.

860257 2010-02-22 06:02:00 If you can, plug it in directly to a computer(Slave it) or use an IDE/SATA>USB adapter to find out whether the problem is with the hard drive, or with the external HD case.
Haven't got a computer with me to do that, unfortunately.

860258 2010-02-22 06:59:00 Have you got another IDE HD then? Stick that it and see if it works fine.

Try booting up with a live linux disc too, could be possible that the drive was formatted to something windows will not recognise, or the drive may be on its last legs..

860259 2010-02-22 07:22:00 Haven't got another IDE to try out, but will try booting up Linux to check out the HDD. Renmoo (66)

860261 2010-02-22 07:36:00 Does not look good then but we still don't know if the drive or enclosure is dead. Sweep (90)

Yea, exactly..

You'll need to slave the drive or test the case somehow, or else we're going nowhere:p
