Here we go again.

What is it with these people?

767013 2009-04-21 11:49:00 It seems the geographic board is sticking its head up as an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars in these tough financial times - maybe they have some sort of strange desire to rid themselves of a job by upsetting the majority of NZers? somebody (208)
767014 2009-04-21 11:50:00 On the plus side, if we left it to Aucklanders to name the 2 islands, they would have names like 'Our Island' and 'That Other One' :clap Myth (110)
767015 2009-04-21 11:52:00 They flexed their muscle when it came to the recent H debate, Now they have some bigger fish to fry.

I'd like to see them disbanded immediately.

If they pick up 3 different maps and all three call the same place by the same name then they should be satisfied its official enough.

767018 2009-04-21 12:49:00 It's going to take them 12 months before they can "publicly consult with all New Zealanders on the names 'North' and 'South'"???? :waughh:

Jesus wept!!!!

And guess who's paying their salaries?? :crying

767019 2009-04-21 21:21:00 It won't stop people calling them North and South. It's simple, and it's logical. pcuser42 (130)

767021 2009-04-21 21:42:00 New Zealand. North Island. South Island. How totally boring are those names? Isn't it about time we embraced the fact that we are no longer an outpost of Empire, and used names that reflect our place in the world?

I'd would love to have us known as Aotearoa/New Zealand, Te Ika a Maui/North Island, Te Wai Pounamou/South Island and Rakiura/Stewart Island. They are lovely, liquid, flowing names that uniquely identify us. For those who say"I can't pronounce that" I say - make an effort, it's not that hard!

BTW I arrived from UK in 1976.
