766338 2009-04-19 09:18:00 Anyone here done one?

I've read around online and they all make it sound relatively easy but honestly what would I be getting myself into?

It will be a colour change not just a respray so will have to do everything

Worth it?

depends on what your trying to achieve.

If its to gloss over a piece of crap then sure, You can't go wrong.even if its just to say you once painted a car,

If its to enhance a half decent car and you have no skill as a painter then your fooling yourself, You won't get close to a professional finish and at best will end up with a devalued car with a hoary arse paint job.

766340 2009-04-19 10:00:00 I have to agree with Metla,

I'm no pro in the area, but I've seen the varied degrees of quality for re-paints. I had my MX5 fully re-painted (Except the hard-top, I didn't quite have enough to re-do that), and I decided to get it professionally done in the end after seeing how bad some friends had done their cars.

Some friends were naturals, they were able to do just grab the spray gun and whip over their car in a flash, making it look marvelous! Others, botched it *horribly* and devalued their car (As Metla said could happen) to the tune of thousands.

Pix? :D

766341 2009-04-19 10:13:00 Back in the good old days......nearly, but not quite, before plastics were common place...:) we used to use a cellulose paint called Brushing Belco, applied with a wide very soft camel hair paint brush. Many coats used to be applied with hours of polishing down each coat.

With patience and a lot of time a professional finish could be achieved.

766342 2009-04-19 10:39:00 I have done some backyard (literally the backyard) resprays, none of them I was particularly pleased with.
Ya cant beat a proper paint booth with filtered air and a paint oven.
The best advice for a backyarder is keep the dust down by watering the area before you start painting. Inside a shed or on the concrete outside spray water everywhere.
You get the primer coat as a practice run.
Things that can go wrong for a backyarder painter
Orange peel from too much paint or reaction withsomething under the paint.
A flock of kamazke midges as the paint dries
Runs from too much paint
Another thing is the correct air pressure for the gun compressor pressure around 115 psi need no more than 40 for gun
Make sure airlines havent been used with inline oiler for air tools
Make sure got water trap and compressor drained of water.
Use a spray mask esp with isocynate paints.

Good luck you will need it because a multitude of things can go wrong

Too bloody right - to get a good, hard finish like the professionals you really do need 2-pack, which is an isocyanate. This is particularly nasty stuff which is cancer-causing and can be absorbed through the skin.

Always support people having a crack at things themselves, but as the others have said, without a lot of skill, and all the right gear, you're heading for heartbreak.

766344 2009-04-19 10:55:00 hmm well at least you guys were honest

im not covering up a piece of crap, its my pride and joy. many many hours of work has gone into it mechanically and now i just want to finish it off

so maybe i should go pro...but from the little i know ching ching?

766345 2009-04-19 10:58:00 Yes it would be the best option to pay for it to get painted but why not buy your own spray gun, spray cans are just useless and you wouldn't get a perfect finish with it, plus in the future if you go to sell the car it may not be as easy if its a crap job. Darryl (5097)
