But hey . . . let's spend your taxes on changing place names instead . Sorry we can't afford equipment or decent teachers for your child's school . But hey . . . let's spend your taxes on changing place names instead . Sorry we can't afford adequate police numbers to handle your burglary report . But hey . . . let's spend your taxes on changing place names instead . Geddit now? |

2009-04-23 06:00:00 | OK, I'm withdrawing from this farce. What at one point had the semblance of a proper debate has as usual degenerated into inane name-calling. If people want to go on ranting about name changes after reading this, then they are either stupid or being deliberately provocative. | 767085 | 2009-04-23 06:19:00 | Now there is a nice quango with Board Chairman Dr Don Grant trying to justify his existence at the same time costing we ordinary folk a fortune. I must assume Tone and Mart hope to get on one of these waste of space in the fullness of time. Or: 1. They work for the NZ Geographic Board and this is there oh so weak attempt to convince us. 2. Or maybe they are Wishy Washy Liberal Weak,Greenpeace,Green Party,Communist,F!@#. 3. Both 1 and 2. 4. Or Māori. 5. Or all of the above.

2009-04-23 06:24:00 | Deliberatley provocative. :) I blame the Maoris. What right do they have? In Australia do you see abbos dancing round at every oppourtunity the government gives them? Wanting to rename islands and cities? Featuring on every tourism or travel ad? No...NZ should be the same. The treaty of waitangi that the Maori Party claims gives them all this land isn't even the treaty that was originally signed. Between enviromentalists and the maori party this country has gone to the dogs.

2009-04-23 06:37:00 | What with aitches in and aitches out??? Who gives a sit. The system and the producers in this country give us a place which on the whole is a good place to live, better than say South Africa, which has more natural resources than we will ever have. And as such we don't like having impositions put on us by silly quangos. Note they say, we have common usage that 99% of the people are happy with, but, if we stick to the status Quo,that would make there day less exciting, you see, they love telling us what to do,same as the H people.

2009-04-23 12:07:00 | Personally I'm of the generation that grew up with older place names that seemed to be valid at the time even if not formalised. I went to primary school in Wanganui East rather than Whanganui East. I went rowing on the Wanganui River. I really do not care what some people want to push on me now apart from the costs involved to others in changing maps, signs, stationery, letterheads, business cards and the like. Currently I live in Tokoroa and I note that was not published on the older maps cited above. I have googled for information on the meaning of the name and came up with this:- www.teara.govt.nz I must admit there probably will not be a name change for my neck of the woods in what I have left of my life. I do realise that with the current event regarding North Is and South Is we can all use whatever they come up with as an alternative, or not as we please. Quite frankly I think that the powers that be will never get multiple iwis to actually agree on anything. The Maori appear to have a tribal based society.
