767052 2009-04-22 03:50:00 Nothing I've heard or read sofar from the Board suggests that the current names are going to be dropped just made official. At the same time Maori names are to be considered. But its up to people whether they use the English name or the Maori one.
No amount of correct information seems to influence the views of paranoid racist ranters.

767053 2009-04-22 03:58:00 I've found the best policy in life is restrain myself from commenting on my mother-in-law's opinions. BUt I did wonder if it this instance in dropping the "the" was a Pom thing ....

I don't think so, though it may be a regional thing.

In this part of the world we speak of going to the Hutt, or going over the hill to the Wairarapa, but then again we go over the hill (another hill) to Wainuiomata, no the.

In both cases where 'the' is used , it is refering to an area or region, where as going to Wainuiomata means going to the town.

We also say going to Lower Hutt without a 'the', even though at the same time we are simultaneously going to the Hutt.

There is now a further problem because the City of Lower Hutt have illegally called themselves 'Hutt City' for some time. Illegally in as much no name change has been officially sanctioned or gazetted.

They just did not like the 'Lower' connotation as compared to the superior 'Upper' of Upper Hutt.

So as you go into that area, there is a road transport sign that says Lower Hutt, and a council sign that says Hutt City. Bewildering for tourists, or even for people as far north as Wanganui

767054 2009-04-22 04:45:00 Pctek speaks wisdom. :D

She does indeed! Must be the cool autumn days of the Mainland (sorry, South Island. Sorry, Te Wai Pounamu) allowing all brain cells to fire logically and efficiently... :)

This would be a common sense approach that would save the taxpayer a heap of cash and save everyone a lot of confusion.

Think of all the maps and tourism brochures that would have to be reprinted! Maybe someone in the Geographic Board's brother runs a printing outfit....

And so, of course, being common sense, the government department will ignore it!

It is.......

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu

(There is not supposed to be a space in that name)

Then there is:
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch, otherwise known as Llanfair

767059 2009-04-22 08:36:00 It seems it is being driven by some fool with nothing better to do rather than the geographic board the fool was on tonight's news apparently he's been on the case for 10 years. It is change just for change sake they did it here in Nelson with a bridge, just confuses the hell out of everyone and serves no real purpose only to appease a minority who have nothing better to do with their lives than worry about who is offending who. I think we should appoint PcTek to chair the referendum that we aren't going to get about whether the names should be changed. gary67 (56)
