766940 2009-04-22 05:28:00 Firearms licences are easy to get for those who are responsible. Sort of like getting a car licence, almost. Attend a few lectures, fill out a few tests, give some charecter references, etc.

Well worth it.

Or, you could get an airgun.

'tis safer to keep them separately :)

766942 2009-04-22 07:00:00 Is it? Even though it's locked within the box inside the locked safe? ubergeek85 (131)
766943 2009-04-22 07:34:00 If you want to appear to have an alarm get one of these (www.trademe.co.nz) or similar and screw it to the front gable of your house, or somewhere that is visible from the road.

That way a potential burglar will see that and assume you have an alarm, and rob the next house that doesn't have an alarm.

766944 2009-04-22 10:11:00 Thanks for the suggestion, though alarm is something that I already have at the moment. It was the alarm that went off when the burglar went into the garage. Though in regards to the stickers, we do have it on windows around the house, but none are stuck to the garage, maybe they assumed that out garage was not hooked up? Hehe bad assumption. CCF (6760)
766945 2009-04-22 10:41:00 The odds are it is a teenage boy who lives very nearby. We had one a couple of years ago - so I taped a note to the inside of a window that said "Smile for the camera xxx!" with his name on the notice. Sneaky break-ins to my car to steal bits and pieces stopped instantly. I never did get him on camera on my property but his mother appreciated seeing the footage of what he got up to while he was supposed to be at school. andrew93 (249)
766946 2009-04-23 01:44:00 Or simply get a massive horn/siren attached to a motion sensor, controlled by a switch, maybe with an auto shutoff thrown in for good measure. Should scare 'em off before they can get much.

I've been waiting for somebody to mention motion-sensor controlled security, you can't approach our house in darkness, the lights will come on while you are still 20 metres away. They are no help for daylight burglaries but that's where door and window security plus an effective alarm system come into play. All entries & exits from our house have deadlocks too, and french-doors are double locked with security locks top and bottom and all windows have security stays.

I also have an alarm with a very loud external siren, and a second one inside the house that would drive you insane if you were anywhere near it. It is out of sight under a hooded recess in a wall so it can't be muffled or even found easily.

I also have some 'passive' alarms around as well, for example there are flashing red LEDs on our garage and back door jambs which are great deterrents. One morning I found a cigarette butt on our back lawn, very close to some windows, but clearly the rather obvious security was sufficient to deter any idea of a break-in.

We live in a 'good' neighbourhood but are on a regularly travelled walking route between the local Mc Donalds and KFC etc. and the neighbouring 'low rent' area.

Being burgled three times rather suggests that there is something you are not doing right, or that you could do more.

Cheers

I use motion sensors to activate camera which in turn either shows up on my pc or I will recieve a txt to log on and check.

Very handy during the day. Also most burgs happen during daylight hours.

Jaycar sell them, they are used for burglar alarms!!! If you want it outside though you need a weatherproof type. An indoor quad element (best type) is under $50. Fir outdoor types it may be more economic to buy a low-cost outdoor sensor light from Bunnings etc, cover the light sensor window that stops it working in daylight and use the internal light switch (relay) to trigger your alarm, release the latch on the Rotweiller's cage or unlock your gun cabinet.

Just remember, cheap security is worse than no security at all.

Cheers
