767294 2009-04-24 04:16:00 :annoyed::groan: what about all those old TVs and the environmental impact eh, you know all those old TVs unnecessarily being chucked, analogue TV cards, VCRs even DVD recorders that have the analogue tuners in them. granted there is those HDD recorders with freeview or sky decoders things but i can imagine some landfill/dump full of old TVs which would still have a bit of life left in them.
im all for change but when it involves electronics i cant stand seeing that sort of thing being chucked unnecessarily. when digital TV stands the test of time and becomes mature enough to not need the box or TV (FGS) having firmware updates i will be convinced, you cant beat analogue for reliability

767295 2009-04-24 04:23:00 Thats not correct - any TV will work fine with a freeview decoder. If the TV is so old it doens't have any component/composite inputs, most decent freeview receivers output through RF so any TV can pick it up as if it were another channel. I can't see any hardware getting thrown on account of this change except analouge TV capture cards for PCs, and a few related bits of equipment. Sure, a lot of people would use this as an oppourtunity to upgrade, but still. Your argument is not founded well William. wratterus (105)
767296 2009-04-24 04:35:00 pft enjoy digital while the box and TV lasts. frgiafricka its just my :2cents: worth. also i know the freeview box (i dont have one personally but the family room does) will work through the aerial coax line granted its not perfect, they may not chuck it for a little fuzz but they may chuck it for a slightly better tele with composite or component if they care about there video quality i personally dont give a rodents about what my video/TV reception is like as long as its in colour and maybe a tolerable amount of fuzz. and hence I dont really want to use a digital service be it freeview, sky or telstra williamF (115)
767297 2009-04-24 04:38:00 Right - so all that whole speel was based on was your personal opinion and thoughts, and no real information or statistics on what most people would want for the future.

You also seem to have forgotten that setting up and configuring satellite TV is a lot easier, tidier and also the equipment is cheaper than setting up and configuring an analouge aerial, for people who like to save money and do things themselves.

767298 2009-04-24 04:47:00 This thread has now reached both the lolz and wtf status.

Bring back the radio I say, and not that fancy fm rubbish either.

767299 2009-04-24 04:48:00 ah fcuk it. if you cant beat em join em. i cant believe im saying this but i might get myself a freeview terrestrial card for my TVPC *shudders* in conjunction with the analogue one for a few years and eventually remove that one, i might need a new motherboard to handle any intensive stuff but so long as i can get it to record in Mpeg or AVI or similar for compatibility it'll be good williamF (115)
767300 2009-04-24 04:50:00 There ya go! :D wratterus (105)

You won't regret it (in terms of the picture quality) :)

767302 2009-04-24 06:20:00 this could be the solution...

aint sky channels encrypted?

why not encrypt freeview therefore locks sky out of tv1/2/3/ brings people back to freeview and sky loses $$$ because we know alot of people went to sky because of UHF poor quality in rural areas or small towns in the country...and sky needs to make $$ so they'll open up Prime to make some advertising FTA $$$

if sky is refusing to show an channel that is technically free to air...why should we let them have TAXPAID FTA channels that we cant even watch via sky tv...

sky is making money off tvnz channels which is actually tax payer funded...surely we should get something back from sky (tax refund would be nice!) and i dont even think sky is paying tvnz or tv3 for broadcasting their channels via sky subscriptions...

why not encrypt freeview

Because that will annoy the tens of thousands of people with existing receivers.
