| 767042 | 2009-04-22 02:23:00 | True, but is our culture so Maori that it warrants a change of the island names? New Zealand is also called Aotearoa, which I'd say reflects the "culture" here well enough? I like pctek's idea ;) |

| 767043 | 2009-04-22 02:34:00 | Nope sorry. Before the people who were known as Romans came along there were others there. I quite liked this from AArdvark this morning: "Maori want us to all call them "Te Ika a Maui" and "Te Wai Pounamu" respectively. So I have a compromise in mind... How about we call the top one "Te North Island" and the bottom one "Te South Island"? But hang on -- I do see a problem... Maori have adopted a new strategy of throwing extra 'h's into their placenames (just ask Michael Laws) so perhaps we'd also need to accommodate that, as a demonstration of further cultural sensitivity. Maybe "Te Northh Island" and "Te Southh Island"? No, that doesn't seem quite right. Ah... I have the answer! We'll call them "The North Island" and "The South Island" Problem solved, crisis averted! " Fantastic idea! :) |

| 767045 | 2009-04-22 02:51:00 | I think I hear the voice of a complacent majority there. There is a difference between change for changes sake and making a change that more truly reflects our culture. Like keeping the H out of Wanganui as it reflects the cultural wishes of the community, rather then the self-important ******y of professional stirrers? |

In the case of W(h)anganui, there seem to be arguments for both spellings, but "it has always been like that" does not seem to be the strongest one. |

Nope, The people of Christchurch can name and spell that name anyway they please, If they chose Kristchurch then that is what it is, There is no spelling mistake there is simply the chosen name. The argument for Wanganui is not "that's they way it has always been" it is this is our city, We named it Wanganui,we are quite happy with the name, now naff off. |

| 767050 | 2009-04-22 03:33:00 | Regarding North and South, personally I think they are crap names and can't see anything wrong with discussing renaming them, I wouldn't however give more weight to certain suggestions based on our racist policies or advocate a separate/secondary name to please a minority of a minority of a minority who will never be happy no matter how many billions are wasted placating them. We could have change only if that is what the people of New Zealand wanted (not some of the the people but The People) and the suggested names should come from the people of New Zealand, and the decision should come from the People of New Zealand. The geographic board is certainly not speaking for the people of NZ and shouldn't be allowed to take any action that affects the people of New Zealand. You mention the mark of civilisation is how well the minority are treated, They are treated damn well, housed, fed, schooled, Free money, redicules jobs, special treatment from birth to death, and still a disprotional amount repay this by preying on the communities around them and saturate our courts and our jails. |
