767032 2009-04-21 23:50:00 Mother-in Law's opinions are usually dodgy, and pom ones doubly so. (But don't tell her I said that.)

Also, by tradition you should encourage her to go further afield for her holidays. Much further.

Tell us whose culture you identify with and a bit of its history.!

767033 2009-04-21 23:58:00 I don't know who first said "the measure of a democracy is how it treats its minorities", but I think it is an aphorism we need to take note of.

However I don't think the intention of the quote was to allow the minorities to rule over the majority.

I suspect that most people don't want the names to be changed, and that seems to be the opinion on this board at least. If everyone did want the name to be changed, I'd grumble, but it would probably be the right thing to do.

New Zealands largest off shore island (North Island)
The Main Land (South Island)
Stewart Island (Stewart Island)

767035 2009-04-22 00:26:00 The Maoris were not the original settlers Maoriori's were the native New Zealanders but unfortunately the Maori's killed all. If the Poms had done the same when they arrived there would be no Maori names today.

Countries such as Iran/Iraq, Turkey were originally Roam but I bet there is no Roman names naming places there now.
UK has had it's fair share of other people claiming ownership over the years, but no sign of them changing all the names to Roman names or Viking names.

Leave NZ names as they stand, there is no need for change unless we are taken over by Australia (which is just a matter of when not if) then I guess we get Aussie names or Aboriginal names.

Apart from not having heard of Roam that was spot on as usual Bant.

.

Nope sorry. Before the people who were known as Romans came along there were others there.

I quite liked this from AArdvark this morning:

"Maori want us to all call them "Te Ika a Maui" and "Te Wai Pounamu" respectively.

So I have a compromise in mind...

How about we call the top one "Te North Island" and the bottom one "Te South Island"?

But hang on -- I do see a problem...

Maori have adopted a new strategy of throwing extra 'h's into their placenames (just ask Michael Laws) so perhaps we'd also need to accommodate that, as a demonstration of further cultural sensitivity.

Maybe "Te Northh Island" and "Te Southh Island"?

No, that doesn't seem quite right.

Ah... I have the answer!

We'll call them "The North Island" and "The South Island"

Problem solved, crisis averted! "

767038 2009-04-22 01:26:00 The Maoris were not the original settlers Maoriori's were the native New Zealanders but unfortunately the Maori's killed all.Whether the Moriori were "all killed off" (displaced, yes, but "all killed off?) by the Maori is a highly debatable point, and is actually irrelevant.

However I don't think the intention of the quote was to allow the minorities to rule over the majority. Don't be so defensive and threatened! It is not a matter of who rules over whom, but recognising that there are (at least) two significant cultures in this country, and according each some recognition.
For purely practical reasons I can't see North Island/South Island disappearing as names any time soon, so what's the problem with adding the Maori names as well?

Like you say, because it is actually irrelevant.

As change for change sake tends to be.
