2009-04-24 09:46:00 | due to lack of commitment Which is one of NCEA's fatal downfalls....I did not gain the UE component of NCEA, but passed level 3 anyway. It never motivated me to learn because it's so open to abuse and very inconsistent.

2009-04-24 09:56:00 | ... it's so open to abuse and very inconsistent. That's actually raised another point, which again comes back to the internal assessments. Schools and teachers don't have to use the NZQA supplied tests - they can write their own, so long as they meet the specifications - which of course means that there is a lot of variation for a single assessment between schools, purely based on which test they decide to use. Although there are moderation processes, schools are warned ahead of time exactly which standard is being moderated that year, and they only need to submit a subset of the test/assessment papers for review. Any smart school will make sure that the paper they're being moderated for is done properly, and that they strategically pick clear-cut examples of students passing or failing, rather than the borderline cases which should really be looked at. Then there's this PC rubbish of not including "Not Achieved" results in a student's record of learning, because apparently we need to shelter our kids from failure, and hide their weaknesses from potential employers (fortunately this issue has been fixed now: www.nzqa.govt.nz).

Record of Learning has always had NA's- But is only avalible to Education Providers. NA's weren't, and still are not included on Records of Achievements, and these are what one would attach to their CV's, etc. |

2009-04-24 10:07:00 | My Dad said if I got 5 subjects school cert he would give me the money to buy a motorbike. I bought a 1970 Jawa 250. Got 51% in French so just scraped in. NCEA looks like a joke so I am giving my kids fa.

2009-04-24 13:22:00 | NCEA decent? That's a joke. Take it from a student who did all three years and levels of NCEA. I actually support NCEA. I did all 3 years too (2005-2007) and passed them all. What I like about it is that each part of the subject is split up and is independent to all the other areas. This is better (IMO) when it comes to exams and internals because you can focus on the standards you know well, do well in them, and not have a poor area drag down the results of the other standards. Sure, it's harder to explain (esp to parents :p) but I think it works well (at least it did for me). One thing I hate is the Achieved/Merit/Excellence grading system. It NEEDS to be more granular - A/M/E tells you very little about how you went.

2009-04-24 14:13:00 | The reason for my failure was that I have half a brain and cruised through school. Leve 2 was a big step up though and I wasnt prepared for it, the failure in that year meant I had to redo things the year after resulting in me missing out on level 3 (I got like 40 level 3 credits) A=30%ish M=30-65%ish E=70-100% Not really giving anyone an idea of how well you did

2009-04-25 01:13:00 | Take it from a student who did all three years and levels of NCEA and UE in one year. It's not bragging, it's just a system that is far too easy to take advantage of, and far too easy all together. Compare our Level 3 work to the workload of Year 13's in the UK and you'll see exactly what I mean. They probably even teach them how to use apostrophe's.
