| 766959 | 2009-04-21 11:38:00 | I'm sick of it, just watching nightline Who cares that the north island is just that, why give it a maori name? Seems everything is going maori, and while I understand that we should "embrace" the culture I really don't think we need to do it . I can be racist at times but I also have some good mates who are of maori decent, and funny thing is, that all this hype about names and rules etc actually offends them as they feel singled out . The extra funding available makes them feel belittled . Oh and now we have an eskimo whinging, something I can remember since forever is now an insult? That girl is taking it personally, why? No one means it to be insulting, "she feels the name is insulting and has no merit" - what about the fact its a well known form of candy in nz? and been around since the 1940's . I'm seriously considering moving planets, if we arent killing eachother we're whinging (or should it be winging, cant have silent h's everywhere) about something that offends us . GRRRRRR! :badpc: |

If they had no name for the Islands before 1840 then North and South is far more legitimate then the crap they have come up with to replace it. Having said that...we could do far better then just calling them North and South. Likewise traditions and what not can be preserved without insisting on special treatment based on race, The Maori seats on the Auckland city council are a prim e example. Let the people select who they want to represent them. |

| 766966 | 2009-04-21 12:52:00 | As noted above, might be due for something better than North Island/South Island. I remember seeing the American TV ads here, where NZ was plainly referred to as North island...South Island, rather than a country. Not sure if renaming would make a difference in a global marketing/tourism sense. Like Japan, which are made de up of 4 main islands...but doubt if their names would be relevant to oversea's visitors... | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||
| 766967 | 2009-04-21 19:25:00 | Granted we do need something a tad bit more original than North and South Island. I don't think the Maori names (Te Ika a Maui - the fish of Maui aka North Island; and Te Waka a Maui - the waka or canoe of Maui aka South Island) will suffice either... just a bit of a tongueful If they should be renamed, name them after some kiwi, or something kiwiana Possibly name them after famous people (Rutherford and Hillary for example) Anyway, thats just my :2cents: worth |
