| 766555 | 2009-04-20 12:30:00 | Just for a bit of nerd like fun. Basic specs of your laptop, and how long it takes to boot to a usable desktop. Its not scientific, Mine boots to a usable desktop yet still takes awhile to launch an app like email which indicates to me its throwing up the visual indicators first and working like a freight train in the background to continue loaing the OS. I'll time mine and post the details soonish. |

| 766559 | 2009-04-20 13:59:00 | Speaking of boot times, here's a nifty little script to time your boot time. just paste in notepad, and save with vbs extension then run it and when its asks to reboot select OK. A window will pop up on next startup saying boot time. Everything written to the registry is removed. Option Explicit On Error Resume Next Dim Wsh, Time1, Time2, Result, PathFile, MsgResult, MsgA, AppName, KeyA, KeyB, TimeDiff MsgA = "Please close all running applications and click on OK." KeyA = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RestartTime\" KeyB = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run\RestartTime" AppName = "ReBoot-Time" Set Wsh = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") PathFile = """" & WScript.ScriptFullName & """" Result = wsh.RegRead(KeyA & "Times") if Result = "" then MsgResult = Msgbox (MsgA, vbOKCancel, AppName) If MsgResult = vbcancel then WScript.Quit Wsh.RegWrite KeyA & "Times", left(Time,8), "REG_SZ" Wsh.RegWrite KeyB, PathFile, "REG_SZ" Wsh.Run "cmd /c Shutdown -r -t 00", false, 0 else Wsh.RegDelete KeyA & "Times" Wsh.RegDelete KeyA Wsh.RegDelete KeyB TimeDiff = DateDiff("s",Result,left(Time,8)) MsgBox "Your computer reboots in " & TimeDiff & " seconds", VbInformation, AppName end if wscript.Quit And for those with a slow startup, try these tricks: 1) Optimize for multiple cores. Go run>msconfig>boot tab>advanced options>tick "Number of processors" and select max in dropdown box 2) If you don't plug your laptop in to an external monitor or projector you can disable TMM from running on startup, its that black screen that shows up for 2-3 seconds: Type Task Scheduler in start search>open it>expand Task Scheduler>Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>Windows>Right Click MobilePC>disable 3) Enable advanced performance on hard drive: Run>devmgmt.msc>expand disk drives>right click laptop hdd>properties>policies tab> make sure "Enable write caching on the disk" and "Enable Advanced performance" are ticked Only do no.3 if your laptop will not be cut off power suddenly, or else it will definetly corrupt data on the drive Back to the topic: Laptops: Portege M500e T7200 2ghz 3gb RAM Vista 43seconds to desktop(home) 52 seconds(school)[due to domain connection startup is slower] 68 proccesses Windows 7 28 seconds to desktop 62 processes Ubuntu 30 seconds BackTrack(boot off sd card) 22 seconds Portege M300 ULV Pentium M 1.2ghz 512mb RAM XP 51 seconds to desktop 53 processes Machboot(fast linux distro) 16 seconds EEE 901 1.6ghz Atom 1gb RAM XP 26 seconds 40 processors eeebuntu 30 seconds Not sure no. of processes Blam |
