766499 2009-04-20 08:40:00 Hi guys

I don't like Trademe's lack of flexibilty and rules etc.

I have found an alternative called Sella - it is totally free ! Has anyone used it and are there are other auction sites in NZ ?

766500 2009-04-20 08:49:00 Just had a quick look mostly it seems to be shops selling off old stock, lets hope it takes off as they don't have many listings yet gary67 (56)
766501 2009-04-20 10:12:00 Its a great idea, but I doubt it'll be very popular.

Since there's less members on SellMeFree, selling stuff there will mean a smaller market, so even if their prices are free it doesn't really help

People would rather pay to put it on a bigger site like TradeMe

766502 2009-04-20 11:22:00 Its APNs competitor to trademe. Its been around for a while, and as Fairfax have a trading website, APN as their competitor must also have one. However it is no threat. There used to be another largish nz trading site, can't rememeber what it was called, but it obviously hasn't become a competitor to trademe.
I know someone who works at trademe, and they are very confident with the business, and they can't see any threat from competitiors as they are in a monopoly posiition.

What I don't understand is why telecom didn't setup Ferrit as a direct competitor to trademe, when they set it up. It should have been setup as a place for NZers to buy and sell stuff. With all the advertising they did, they could have slaughtered trademe. I can see trademe getting purchased by ebay eventually.

766504 2009-04-20 19:53:00 sell me free was the other one you are all thinking of it to didn't make it. Interesting comment Nomad didn't realise that will bear that in mind thanks gary67 (56)
766505 2009-04-20 20:10:00 I am sure there must be a "market" for a Trademe alternative, given as how there are lots of people not happy with them.
But I suppose it just shows how hard it is to get noticed.
Also of course an auction site needs viewers and bidders or you wont sell anything !

766506 2009-04-21 03:45:00 I think the other one was (and still is) http://www.zillion.co.nz/ bevy121 (117)
766507 2009-04-21 06:30:00 Another one is webuy.co.nz
but it has a lot of international users on it since users are the shareholders (their effort to build up a userbase)

I think that whole 'shareholder' thing is a gimmick to get people to use it. I had never heard of it before. ZIllion is the other one I had heard of, but it doesn't look like it has developed any further than when I last saw it a few years ago, I eventhink their membership numbers look about the same. I wonder if they cull the members for unused accounts, as I haven't used my account for years, but it is still active. I signed up when they had a competition for an ipod if you became a member. Neither is going to be succesful, unless they advertise strongly, and entice sellers, perhaps by having free listings. Trademe has market saturation, and their fees aren't too much more.
