| 769508 | 2009-04-29 10:32:00 | Bought the CD's tonight and although many of my favourite New Zealand songs aren't on it, a good chance to listen to some music I hadn't heard previously. In my case I've heard very little of the bands from the "This Century" disk, I've heard of the names of bands like Opshop and Phoenix Foundation but never actually heard of any of their songs. So it is an interesting experience given I've spent "this century" listening mostly to English alternative bands. It's as you'd expect a pop music album, so I guess this is what they play on NZ FM if I'd ever tuned in. So far on first play of the this century disk though it is still sounding pleasant enough, might make me listen to some local music that I've missed out on by avoiding FM radio. |

| 769509 | 2009-04-29 10:53:00 | "The Great New Zealand Songbook brings together over 60 homegrown Kiwi songs, from pioneering days to the present. Most can be sung without difficulty, and they are accompanied by music, guitar chords and explanatory notes. From classics like "David Lowston" and "Blue Smoke" to recent compositions like "Keep It Small" and "The Ballad of the Export Sheep", these are songs with a distinctive New Zealand identity setting them apart from the sea of imported material that surrounds us. | selenaeden (14867) | ||

Do you really mean NZ Songs or NZ Artists or Bands? NZ songs in my opinion mean songs about NZ. Like McKenzie & his dog by Brendan Dugan for example. Or Without my Gumboots by Fred Dagg (Alias John Clark). Pokarekareana by Hayley Westrena. What did you listen to last century? |

Marginal stuff at the time, but great satire. :D |

Last century I listened to a lot of English alternative as well, I'm from the Sex Pistols and Clash era . But New Zealand bands like The Clean, Toy Love, Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings, The Bats . Always rated The Prophet by Working With Walt as one of the best New Zealand songs, it is about New Zealand and is particularly powerful in my opinion (especialy if you play it while in the Ureweras) . |
