768042 2009-04-24 06:45:00 :stare:I'm actually pretty shocked .

The wireless card in my HP 6710b died . Since I had the old lenovo lying around,I took out the wireless card and went to put it in the HP, plus I was looking forward to finally getting N capabilities in here, as we've had N wireless in the house for a while and I've been wanting to use it with this computer, I've come to really like the matte screen  . However, I was greeted by a boot up message:

Error Message 104- Unsupported Wireless Device

:horrified

The laptop refuses to function until either the "Unsupported" Wireless card is removed, or replaced with a supported model, which, according to the internet, needs to have the same device ID as the ones listed in the BIOS .

Who actually knew that HP had wireless card whitelists? It might be all good while laptops are still in Warranty, but once they go out the price for service is ridiculously high . Not only is this the type of thing that creates a customer service nightmare . You wouldn't get away with something like this in canada, it's a violation of competition laws .

From what I read, alot of people say it is ridiculous whining, and that the number of users who actually mess with these parts is so small that it's insignificant, however, at the end of the day, It's only ridiculous whining if you believe vendors have the right to lock-in consumers . The market will correct this eventually, as locked-in consumer who "whine" migrate to more user-friendly suppliers .

Shouldn't they at least have to tell consumers this before the purchase is complete? Or at least put it in the use guide?

I won't be buying HP again, thats for sure .

If only it were that simple.
The whitelist is built into the BIOS- it blocks off any other cards other than the ones that HP says can work being used in the system. It can't be a Centrino issue, because I've swapped out a Intel card for an Atheros in a Centrino system, I cannot understand why they feel they need to use this whitelist.

768045 2009-04-24 07:49:00 If youre game, you could try something like this (richud.com).

This MAY fix it (h20000.www2.hp.com)

768047 2009-04-24 08:02:00 Why would an HP update break it? Send it here then, I'll have it :p Speedy Gonzales (78)

nonono, i meant the other trick, with the network card. I've tried the HP Update, but it still doesnt support the card that I want to use (A Broadcom card)

Really I just create this thread because I felt like kicking up a stink about it, I don't understand how they can be allowed to lock their laptops like this- Do they like hemmeraging their customers? :dogeye:

768049 2009-04-24 08:12:00 To be honest, I've really really come to like this laptop- I think it's the matte screen, and the fact that it doesnt have a shiny back on it. Plus the speakers are amazing. mabix (10146)
768050 2009-04-24 08:36:00 You could remove the wireless card, then use a USB one or route a USB port inside? jwil1 (65)
768051 2009-04-24 09:08:00 USB wireless adaptors are useless, if it has PCMCIA you can get one off trademe etc. you may have to downgrade to 802.11g wifi instead of N williamF (115)
