767888 2009-04-23 23:56:00 Hello, found this through google with the keywords as the title, only found the thread was five years old.

I recently bought a PC from an online site - and found that I was scammed. The credit company is working on it to fix it right now, but as of now, I am $1500 less than what I was two weeks ago.

Because of this incident, I am now very wary of buying online. I know of pricespy, but am still wary of buying from a dealer listed on there. I figure that this is the best place to ask, so here I am.

So, questions;
1/ dealers on pricespy, are they all reputable and send the items listed?
2/ if not, which ones are bad?
3/ and which ones should I try to use?
4/ I'm thinking of these shops: PC OnLine Shop, OCZone/UEC, Extreme PC - thoughts?

I know of ascent; and have really good service with them, but they are a little pricey. It could be that's the price for security of mind....

Thanks for any help, in advance

767889 2009-04-24 00:06:00 I recommend PBTech and Ascent.
Never had a problem with either.

767890 2009-04-24 00:17:00 Ascent and Computer Lounge are the two best in NZ, according to reviews. With the economy the way it is the extra few (or even few hundred) dollars you may spend getting something from a reputable store is well worth it.

Have a look at that thread over at GP forums, it gives a good indication of who's good and who's not.

All those are bad except extreme PC.

Read the gpforums thread in Wrat's post, should give you a good idea of who's good and who's not

767892 2009-04-24 00:41:00 As others have already said here (and elsewhere), you generally get the level of service you pay for . You have to decide whether you're willing to risk it buying from a cheaper company - not so much of the issues you've had, but more along the lines of after sales service, warranty claims etc . Trying to get warranty issues sorted out by some of the lower-priced places can be a painful experience, while more reputable firms like Ascent are generally much better .

I've bought a fair bit of stuff from PCOnlineShop, and filed one RMA claim with them - they were better than I expected . The warranty claim was sorted out in about 3 days, which is surprisingly fast given that the cheap shops usually stuff you around for weeks .

I typically buy cheaper items, from the cheaper companies listed on Pricespy - and take the risk that if something goes wrong, I will fight an uphill battle to get it sorted under warranty . For bigger-ticket items, I go with more reputable companies, because I know if something goes wrong, getting it fixed under warranty is probably going to be easier .

767893 2009-04-24 01:34:00 +1 for all the posts

I too generally buy items under $50 from the cheap toaster shops (the products generally work and even if they dont, warranty wont be such a headache)

But for full blown computer systems and upgrades, only trust the reputable retailers, I generally prefer QMB computers, MCT computers, and Playtech

767894 2009-04-24 01:49:00 Definitely Ascent - top service - can't fault them.

My number 2 (personally) would be iFocus. Built / brought 2 complete systems with them, along with a number of parts over the last couple of years. Had to RMA a DOA mobo as well. All absolutely hassle free.

They've gone out of their way to offer alternative deals when buying as well. Service has been excellent.
