769040 2009-04-30 06:59:00 After carefully explaining the differences between bacteria and viruses they still ask for a prescription of anti biotics.
The whole reason we have some of the super bugs is because of stupid people demanding ant-biotics from the doctor and then the doctor giving in just to shut the hypochondriacs up then the patients not finishing the course of anti-biotics so letting the bugs build up an immunity.

769041 2009-04-30 11:38:00 Viruses are alive - how do you think they multiply? They cannot multiply outside a host cell though.

Depends on how you define alive, but viruses aren't generally considered to be alive. Of course if you listened to podcast I suggested, you'd hear that even experts can disagree on this one by defining life in different ways. So you're wrong and you're right.

I think she is right about them being alive. en.wikipedia.org

769044 2009-05-01 04:54:00 It's always been arguable whether or not viruses are alive. They are quite different in their structure compared to pro/eukaryotes. They are composed of the same molecules (DNA/RNA, proteins) but they lack a plasma membrane, something that all living cells have, apart from viruses that 'steal' a portion of plasma membrane from a host cell. They also lack any organelles. qazwsxokmijn (102)
769045 2009-05-01 05:19:00 Viruses perform basic programmed tasks, like a computer. Computers are not considered to be 'alive', so why should viruses. They cannot assess situations, communicate, and adapt to their environment. Or so we think... sammo450 (13626)
769046 2009-05-01 05:38:00 viruses. cannot assess situations, and adapt to their environment.

Neither can most people. Does that make them dead?

Viruses are alive - they reproduce. Dead things don't.

769047 2009-05-01 06:01:00 I don't mean a military type assesment, just working out what is going on around them and how it will affect them. The reproduction is a programmed thing though. I don't believe that reproduction has anything to do with wether or not something is alive. People with reproductive problems can't reproduce, but they have many other assets which classify them as 'alive'. Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. It has some good theories on life. sammo450 (13626)

The Neon Genesis Evangalion is not a good example in this case.

769049 2009-05-01 12:36:00 Governments around the world these days love to put the frights up people, it probably makes people more pliant and easier to control if they are continually scared about things.

From what I've heard so far if reporting is accurate with the NZ cases and those outside of Mexico, this strain of flu is so mild as to be hardly noticeable as influenza.

The 3 times I've had flu, real flu, not the common cold "flu" people have and say they have had "a touch of flu", I have been knocked back for several days (in bed) with aches & pains, very high temperature, and have taken another week or two to come right.
For a minute there I thought another song was coming on,oh the relief.

I can tell you it is awfully warm here in Thai.
Someone said, death will come when it will come,I think they might be right.
