| 768916 | 2009-04-27 21:43:00 | Jimm: Without being too blunt about it, people with your qualifications and skills are very common, and there are plenty of people who have tarnished the reputation of people with your sort of qualifications. As others have already said, you'll need to start at the bottom and work up - i.e. start at basic entry-level helpdesk, and as you gain more experience, climb up that way. Just bear in mind that at the moment, these jobs are hard to find, since companies are reluctant to hire staff - so if you have other skills, you might be better off trying your luck in other industries first. I think what is said above is true. Can't expect to start earning money straight off. Get experience and gain more knowledge and work up the ladder. |

| 768917 | 2009-04-27 22:16:00 | one poster asks what Im interested in and I replyed fixing PC's and flight simulator. Yes it's possible. Likely? Thats another thing. I have a friend who can build and troubleshoot most electronic things. And I don't mean just PCs. He's a bit derogatory towards me as a PC Tech - he calls me a "card-jockey". He's not far wrong because he can read a circuit diagram and build things like amps and so on. I can't. He also has great programming skills although he does this for himself, not as a living. He's been doing this sort of thing for the last 20 years. He is also a big fan of MS Flight Sim and has written various mods, I guess they are called, for it. Now he would like to work for these guys: http://www.pacificsimulators.com/ He probably could. Assuming they have any vacancies. You need to build up your skills some more and then go out and get some experience elsewhere first. Then come back and look at companies like this later. Fixing PCs isn't too useful a skill for this. |

It seems like you have an interest in computers and flight sims, but don't have a destination in mind. There are always jobs out there; the company I work at is currently hiring C developers and testers |

| 768920 | 2009-04-28 00:55:00 | I don't know what I want to do because nobody has given me an opportunity to try and see if I like working in IT Don't want to sound harsh Jim, but the world doesn't work that way, and neither it should. You need to be passionate about something if you want to make a career out of it. ICT is a very broad, deep industry, and without any idea about what 'floats your boat', you won't get very far. As others have said, help-desk work, or doing break-fix on printers, laptops etc is a good place to start. I'd suggest you start off by deciding on either hardware or software, and head down the appropriate path. If it's hardware, get some work experience (for free if necessary), dabble at home, read a lot of articles to learn things etc. There's papers at Open Polytechnic on networking etc too. If it's software, read some books to give you some insights into how programming works, and which languages can do what. From there, it's years of learning, re-learning, practice, refining techniques etc. |

| 768921 | 2009-04-28 01:03:00 | Jimm, how about these ideas: - try contacting some local companies and ask if you can "shadow" with someone for a day, explaining that you are interested in "a career in IT" - try to get a range of positions to buddy up with: Help Desk, System Administrator, Quality Assurance, Database Admininstrator, Software Developer Whatever you decide, you'll most likely find you'll need more qualifications, eg. University/Tech degree in some IS/IT related subject. Another out-there-idea, what about something through the NZ airforce, you could maybe kill three birds with one stone: - interest in flight sim/avionics - gain IT exposure (go for Information Analyst position or similar) - come out with a university degree paid by the government |

Jimm: You could also sign up for some courses to see if you enjoy them. An employer wouldn't take someone on just so the employee could see if they liked it! But I think you first need to decide where you want to end up. If you dont have a destination in mind, you'll just end up floundering and not getting anywhere. |
