| 768907 | 2009-04-27 11:48:00 | Some the above posters have offended me. All I did was ask a simple question as to how easy it is to get a job in the IT industry. Then one poster asks what Im interested in and I replyed fixing PC's and flight simulator. Harden up. Your answer to that question just might lose you a job opportunity in a real interview. Think about the context of the question, if you're looking for a job then telling people about flight simulator is unlikely to further your aims to get a job. Talking about your interest and skills with Databases is a better way to answer that question. In an interview you might not get the feedback about where you went wrong and getting offended won't teach you anything for the next interview. |

| 768908 | 2009-04-27 11:48:00 | So what do you know about Access? Well I did modify one a whole aircraft register from one table into categories and with queries to each individual aircraft manfacturer based on which table it is in. So I could search say Bell in the helicopters section of the database and only get bell helicopters and the same for fixed wing such as Cessna or Boeing. |

If you get a job with Boeing let me be the first person to acknowledge I was wrong. |

At the moment it looks like you can do queries on a Access database and / or modify tables. What other experience do you have even if not qualified? Have you done a C.V. ? |

C.V will be updated tomorrow - Thank for reminding me. |

| 768915 | 2009-04-27 20:54:00 | I dont think Somebody's comments are joking, finding people who have the skills, and the knowledge can sometimes be be awkward. I had a guy a few years back come asking me for a Job - had all the paper work under the sun - that meant nothing if he couldn't do the actual jobs. I gave him a test - one of the spare PC's in the workshop - rigged it so it wouldn't boot before he arrived. Told him find the fault in that PC as to why it wouldn't boot - a common cause (good hint I thought) - showed him where all the testing stuff / equipment / Software was and I left him to it - went inside to make us both a cuppa - came out - and ^&$&% he had the whole thing completely stripped. --- What was the fault ?? faulty Memory. Gave him a few other questions to answer - easy stuff, esp after looking over the paper work he had. Asked him to show me how to format a Drive using a windows 98 Boot Floppy - couldn't do it. So after looking at the networking quals - asked him the correct order to wire up a Cat5 straight through B Ethernet cable - his answer - it doesn't matter which way its wired as long as the in and out are the same order at both ends - now while this is true, there is a standard wiring code for A & B.(Cross Over & straight through), and those are simple questions, not like the ones I got a fair while back before I started my own business. Yeah every one looks up google - its a good source of Information. .... Seriously though - you do need to have skills - wanna Bes are a dime a dozen - thats why there are so many cowboys about, here today- gone tomorrow- and its usually the poor customer who's left in the lurch with no backup. Ofthesea: I'm not joking at all. If you or anyone here thinks that you could fill jobs at either of the two companies I'm referring to, PM me and I'll put you in touch with the relevant people. One company is a well known consulting firm looking for people who are passionate about IT, and also have good business and people skills - they only hire the best of the best. Another is a medium sized specialist firm, looking for people with a specific set of skills (looking for lateral hires, rather than grads or students), and again, only hire people who are highly experienced an qualified. Jimm: Without being too blunt about it, people with your qualifications and skills are very common, and there are plenty of people who have tarnished the reputation of people with your sort of qualifications. As others have already said, you'll need to start at the bottom and work up - i.e. start at basic entry-level helpdesk, and as you gain more experience, climb up that way. Just bear in mind that at the moment, these jobs are hard to find, since companies are reluctant to hire staff - so if you have other skills, you might be better off trying your luck in other industries first. |
