768285 2009-04-25 08:59:00 You have advanced a straw man argument.

As we speak New Zealand has military forces deployed in Afghanistan - are they there protecting all of our freedoms? We are there supporting US foreign policy - and neither the US nor NZ is in the slightest danger of falling to Afghanistan.

Nor were we or our allies in danger of falling to Vietnam - and the proof of this is that the Vietcong won that war...

The list goes on - nearly every deployment of NZ forces overseas over the last five decades has been about the advancement of the foreign policy of our allies - not about freedom.

It is our duty to fight alongside our allies, To defend all of our freedoms, and if our allies fall then we are doomed. This is true now, during WW2 and WW1.

Accept it, You may live in a bubble but it wouldn't protect you from much."

Deane F:- You advance a straw man argument yourself in my opinion.
Definition here:- en.wikipedia.org

Nowhere did Metla bring up Afghanistan or Vietnam for that matter. It is true to say that he did mention "now" which possibly gives you the right to bring up current conflicts like Afghanistan but why did you mention Vietnam? During the Vietnam War we ( from NZ ) were helping Allies fight the "Cold War" as it was termed or the fight against Communism which has sadly failed anyway but still alive. New Zealand has also helped out with peace keeping forces over many years as well under the UN umbrella for example but that is another issue altogether.

My view of violence in general is that it is mostly wrong but sometimes right.

Where do you stand on that issue? Looking at your interests I see this:-
InterestsPixelated violenceDoes this mean it's OK provided you don't see it much like the alleged offenders faces are pixelated on TV? Or do you use pixels to attack other people? Just curious. You mention five decades 1914 - 2009 = ? Do the Maths for yourself.

The original ANZACs ( I hesitate to put an apostrophe in so Roddy can not moan ) was a composition of troops from Australia and New Zealand in WW1. That was then rather than now.

PCtek is correct in saying as she did:-
"And does it stop the human race fighting? NO, there's still loads of it going on."

It's going on in New Zealand like Neighbours at War, Aucklanders vs the rest, Pakeha vs Maori, NZ citizens vs Immigrants, PC vs Mac, AMD vs Intel, this browser vs that. It happens on this forum and others. It happens when one person disagrees with another. It happens between Husband and Wife and also defacto relationships or even civil unions for all I know on that one.

I think it comes down to teaching respect for others and also toleration.
Unfortunately there are some things I will not tolerate. I guess this is due to the way I was brought up and schooling and my general life experience.
For example I will NOT tolerate people walking into my home and stealing things.

"Lest we forget" in my view means do not forget that people went to WW1 to protect the Commonwealth as a whole. According to history that is. According to my view and as I believe it. "We will remember them" was a vow made at that time and has lasted longer than most marriage vows.

I defend the position Metla has taken. Sorry Metla as I believe you can stand up for yourself rather than me doing it for you.

Deane F. It is because a number of people living in New Zealand went out of New Zealand during WW2 and the USA joined in WW2 after the attack on Pearl Harbour in Dec 1941 that you are not forced to plant rice and live on the output.

768286 2009-04-25 09:06:00 My father ..............
Yes shame on you pctek.
:)

Shame for what? Saying people will continue to fight each other, and pointing out all the wars before hand that no-one bothers remembering now?

My grandfather was forced to fight for the Germans, then put in a Gulag by the Russians for doing so.

I bet no-one would have made him welcome at one of these parades.

So what do you bet? Any person who stands up for what they believe would be welcome in my place for a discussion. I would think your Grandfather would be welcome at my place in the event he is still alive.

Heaps of people were forced to fight but he could have said, "No"

Much like concientious objectors who were villified and did not go off to war for example. Documentary on Prime tonight which I was interested in but did not watch due to replying to this thread.

I don't hate any person regardless of their Race, Origions and etc.

Do I presume that you had an actual conversation with your Grandfather or was the information you retrieved was handed down from other relatives?

768293 2009-04-25 11:00:00 I respect the ANZAC's 100%; who went off to war for the sake of Queen and country, led by a bunch of pompous British idiots and their poorly planned ideals and strategies, those ANZAC's who needlessly died on such places as Normandy when they could have survived had it not been for the arrogance and idiocy of those twits commanding them to meet their fates

**** the queen, **** the pompous British commanders.

To the ANZAC's.. those who fought despite the odds... lest we forget
