768274 2009-04-25 06:16:00 It is our duty to fight alongside our allies, To defend all of our freedoms, and if our allies fall then we are doomed. This is true now, during WW2 and WW1.

Accept it, You may live in a bubble but it wouldn't protect you from much.

You have advanced a straw man argument.

As we speak New Zealand has military forces deployed in Afghanistan - are they there protecting all of our freedoms? We are there supporting US foreign policy - and neither the US nor NZ is in the slightest danger of falling to Afghanistan.

Nor were we or our allies in danger of falling to Vietnam - and the proof of this is that the Vietcong won that war...

The list goes on - nearly every deployment of NZ forces overseas over the last five decades has been about the advancement of the foreign policy of our allies - not about freedom.

Apology accepted. All opinions now welcome and given

Yes, They are protecting our freedoms by doing what is asked by our allies. we are weak, so we contribute where we can so we can enjoy the freedom bought about by having strong allies. If we contribute nothing then we deserve nothing.

Or do you think we send people off to die for shits and giggles?

768277 2009-04-25 06:42:00 Um - I can understand the sentiments about ANZAC Day - but it is to commemorate the New Zealand and Australian soldiers who lost their lives in Gallipoli (mostly) in WWI.

Wrong. That is your opinion / interpretation but is not the current official line. www.anzac.govt.nz

768278 2009-04-25 07:08:00 What we are saying is,thanks lads for fighting and dying for our freedom, these words say my thanks and thoughts so well........

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget."

And I am a cynic too.

768279 2009-04-25 08:01:00 How can anyone not be thankful to the many that died?

I know I definitely dont have the guts to run at the enemy knowing that I was most likely going to die, but they did it

The least we can do is remember them for what they did

768281 2009-04-25 08:08:00 I always have problems understanding why we have our memorial day on April 25, a day when we celebrate a failed invasion of Turkey. A more appropriate day would be at the end of one of the wars.. paulw (1826)

Its not like its a big ask to spare a thought for those the fought for us, even if my parents wernt even thought of at the time
