768845 2009-04-27 19:45:00 We have an oil heater with a timer in our family room. We use it to warm the room from 5.30am - 7am so it is nice and warm when we get up and have brekky at 6am. It is a 2400KW De Longhi model.

768846 2009-04-27 19:49:00 Check out Consumer here (www.consumer.org.nz) I know the guy that does the heating tests and they are very reliable gary67 (56)
768847 2009-04-27 20:40:00 ? What do you mean?

To OP.. my suggestion would be a small oil filled radiant heater

There is a class of electric fan heater called "ceramic heaters", which in my experience appear to be more efficient than normal electric fan heater. I think Target or Consumer did a feature on these last year.

768848 2009-04-27 20:58:00 I see that Consumer recommends banning un-flued gas heaters since they emit CO2 and moisture. Fair enough. The Dragons and I will be sleeping on the lawn this winter since we have the same fault.

Although I frequently scorn Consumer, I have to agree with them that either panel or oil-fin heaters are best for a bedroom. Since you are renting, I guess that means oil-fin background heating.

768849 2009-04-27 21:17:00 How is one electrical heater more efficient than another?
Forgetting the fan and forced flow of air I thought electical heater work on a resistor so its volts times amps.
In a fixed space ie a room isnt it just ohms law to heat the space to a certain temperature.
I think there should be a case for banning lpg heaters without a exhaust to outside.
They are dangerous without ventilation and leaving an aperture open for ventilation defeats the idea of heating the space.

768850 2009-04-27 21:46:00 Anybody wanting things banned should be prohibited ;)

(Except when banning spammers, Lucas, or Apple.) :ban

768851 2009-04-27 22:03:00 Ban Lucas? I have a nice ACR15 alternator on my camper will I have to remove it and put on a Japanese one?
Why would I want to remove a bulky unreliable low powered alternator and fit a compact high power reliable one on?

768852 2009-04-27 23:08:00 I thought radiant and oil filled were two different things? I think I might go look at oil filled. But what brands are good and what to stay away from. Any help appreciated. MrWhiskers (11134)
768853 2009-04-27 23:13:00 Thanks for the link to the heaters in consumer. I can't get it all so will head to the library to do some reading before I look. MrWhiskers (11134)
768854 2009-04-27 23:31:00 They recommend the Creda CREOH24 oil filled heater.
