768877 2009-04-27 07:10:00 Depends on your skill set in my opinion, if you don't have a skill set yet there's always hell desk work, which can be a good way to get your foot in the door. kersonan (13264)

In which case you have 4 legs and big ears?

My advice - unless you are interested in a specialised area of IT, then forget it and get a trade instead.

768881 2009-04-27 08:24:00 If you have the right skills, and the right attitude, then yes, there are definitely still job opportunities out there. I know of two companies right now which are currently screaming out for good IT staff, but they have high standards and will only hire the best. If you're just an "average" person, then you will difficult to find work, particularly with the "r" word floating around. somebody (208)

if you only want to be in IT for the $$ then look some place else.
yes it can be good $$ but if that's all you care about you wont do a good job.

It's not easy at the best of times, and it's getting harder by the day . . . . I've got several mates in the industry who've just come back from the UK due to the tightening market over there, and they're highly qualified and experienced .

As I've said before on here, if you really want to do well in IT, get to know how a business works holistically, and how IT fits into that . Learn to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, be punctual, well presented, enthusiastic, listen etc

768884 2009-04-27 08:42:00 As with many roles these days, it's often who you know than what you know, although you won't get far without the 'what'.

As others have said above, you need to be a specialist.

Asking about "A job in the IT industry" is a waste of time, because there are very few generalists (who can do everything) and not much of a need for generalists.

A question like that is like saying "I want to be a surgeon". What kind of surgeon? Orthopaedic surgeon? Neurosurgeon? Plastic surgeon? Thoracic surgeon? Vascular surgeon? Tree surgeon? :)

IT project work (a general term, for what can be very specialist areas of work) is the most interesting and rewarding (IMO, financially and otherwise), but you would definitely need to be a specialist in SOMETHING to get involved in project work (depending on whether the project was infrastructure or software, for instance)...
