Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget."

768257 2009-04-25 03:35:00 We used to take passengers to Anzac Cove and go to the Aussie and Kiwi memorials when I drove the buses on any trips that had Turkey on the trip itinerary. It used to be quite an eye opener seeing young people's respect for the place.

Drinking and nonsense used to just come to a total stop when we were in that area it was quite a transformation of most passengers.

There is a fantastic little museum at a small village on the cove that has a lot of stuff found in the area over the years. The Turks in general were extremely friendly throughout the country but even more so in that little area.

Quite a moving experience visiting the Gallipoli Peninsula. I have taken several tours there.

What are we remembering? The dead who fought in the last 2 World Wars? OK, fair enough, although loads of them in the 1st one went off thinking it was some great adventure. More fool them.

But of course people will forget.
Who remembers the thousands and thousands of wars throughout history and the millions who died in them or as a result of them? Archeologists.

And does it stop the human race fighting? NO, there's still loads of it going on.

Will it prevent a WWIII? I doubt it. What sort of WWIII there moght be may alter, but never? Nah.......

I was going to tell you to pull your head out of your ass, but I won't. We should expect these comments from someone that hears about a car accident involving a teenager and immediately points blame to the teenager when all along it was the old drunk and probably about your age

My wife and I were there a couple of years ago. That place has an atmosphere of its own that you can almost touch. So Silent. It is a very spiritual place that almost gives you goosebumps.

So does this mean we don't remember the sacrifice they paid?
Just becuase they went seeking adventure doesn't mean that we should forget the ultimate sacrifice that many of them paid.

No, I also doubt it, but the point behind the ANZAC memorial services is to remember those who sacrificied their lives, health etc so that following generations (people like ourselves) could enjoy the freedom we do.

I will be honest with you all, I find it rather saddening at the number of people who don't care about this day - people who have no idea of the horrors that our ancestors went through to give us the freedom we seem to take for granted these days.

Do we honestly think that hitler and the german/japanese war machines would've just given up and gone home one day and left us all alone? This was only 60+ years ago. Look back in history and many of the other empires - they didn't just last a couple of years, they went on for decades.
If it wasn't for their sacrifice we could all still be under Nazi German or Imperial Japanese rule - and I am sure none of us would want that.

So heck, take a few hours out of your year, and partake in a remeberence service to thank those who are still alive, and the families of those who lost fathers/mothers/brothers/sisters etc.

Lest we forget

Pretty upsetting to read comments like this.
ANZAC day is New Zealand and Australias day to remember the fallen from Boer, WW1and2 Korea, Vietnam, and three on Timor island.
Its a New Zealand thing for New Zealanders and it is despicable to say more fool them.
