862393 2010-02-28 05:07:00 I have a Compaq CQ40 144tu and for some reason cannot upgrade to the latest bios. I am currently running bios f .30 but if i go to there update page here
h10025.www1.hp.com it states that the latest version is f.61.
If i try and upgrade to this bios it flashes ok and erases the old bios then flashes the new one then shuts the lappy down. When you power on you get the compaq logo with push esc key for menu in the bottom left but thats it, no boot and no key pushing makes any difference. Does the same thing with F.55 A version of the bios as well.
Version f.30 seems to be the only one that works. I have to emergency flash the bios via the remove battery and ac cord, hold down windows key and B and push power with a flash pen in the usb slot with a copy of the f.30 bios so it re-flashes that on there so the lappy will work again.

I am running windows 7 and everything else is standard.

Everything works fine on the bios f.30 but i just find it interesting i cannot upgrade the bios. Anybody have any clues as to maybe why this would be.

862394 2010-02-28 05:25:00 Go into the BIOS, set it to the default settings, reconfigure the BIOS, then save the settings. Then reboot Speedy Gonzales (78)
862395 2010-02-28 05:30:00 Sorry you may have not understood my question, If i flash to the new bios the lappy hangs when you power it up, you cannot get into the updated bios. The only bios that works is if i flash back to the f.30 one. presso (10113)
862396 2010-02-28 05:35:00 Umm the winflash program. Does that extract the files to the USB flash drive, or floppy? Or are you meant to run it from windows, then it reboots then flashes? Since it says to double click on it after you download it Speedy Gonzales (78)
862397 2010-02-28 05:46:00 once you download it you run it with admin rights, It brings up a screen and goes through the normal gaff of do you want to upgrade, it has a box on one side of the screen one displaying my old bios f.30 and the second box with the new bios f.61 then asks if you want to upgrade, selecting yes goes though the flash process once finished it says successful then shuts down the computer but when you go to power the lappy back up it brings up the logo of compaq and push esc for menu in the bottom left corner but this is where it hangs and you can do nothing until i go through the emergency procedure of flashing back to my old f.30 before it works. Non of the upgraded bios's above the f.30 seem to want to work for some reason. Just has me stumped is all.

Yes the whole flash procedure is designed to be run within windows because as soon as you run it it decompresses and runs.

862398 2010-02-28 06:12:00 I would send an email to HP. It sounds like the latest BIOS is stuffed. This has happened to one PC I've updated before. It turned on but wouldnt go past the post screen. It kept trying to recover / look for the BIOS on cd or floppy. So, I decided / or had to reflash the BIOS before that. Its been fine since Speedy Gonzales (78)
