862234 2010-02-28 03:13:00 I'm sure this has been asked before, but regarding more than 2GB of memory with a 32bit OS. Assuming the Mobo supports it. Will a system run better with 2x1GB of dual channel, 2x1GB Dual channel + 1GB single or 2x2GB Dual channel? I think I've worded that correctly, 3 scenarios. Driftwood (5551)
862235 2010-02-28 03:20:00 Depends how many slots are on the mobo, and how much ram each slot can take. ie: If a slot can only accept up to 1x512 mb, then obviously you cant put 1x1 GB in each slot. it wont work. If you put 2 x 1 GB + 1 GB in the 3rd slot, on some mobos, that'll change it to single not dual channel. It'll probably work better with 2x2 GB. But you wont be using all of the memory Speedy Gonzales (78)
862236 2010-02-28 03:51:00 This is a GA-EP35-DS3 with 4 slots.
There was one other scenario I didn't mention. 2x (2x1GB) dual channel.

862237 2010-02-28 03:56:00 Well it doesnt really matter, if youre only going to put 2-3 GB in it. And install 32 bit windows. Its either 1x1 GB in each. Or 2x2 GB in each. If you're only going to use 2 slots Speedy Gonzales (78)
862238 2010-02-28 05:35:00 2 x 2GB would probably be best to make the best use of dual channel.

keep in mind that any 32bit windows workstation OS (windows server is not a workstation OS) will only be able to address 3.25GB of ram.

862239 2010-02-28 07:38:00 It *will* make a difference actually, but performance difference will be negligible.

Deimos is on the money though, and the 3.25GB is approx, depending on GPU RAM etc ;)

862240 2010-02-28 20:58:00 This system currently has 2x1GB dual channel. Is there likely to be any noticable difference if it's changed to 2x2GB dual channel. Driftwood (5551)
862241 2010-02-28 21:19:00 Well, it'll give you an extra 1.25 / 1.5 GB thats about it. And you maybe able to run a few more programs at once Speedy Gonzales (78)
862242 2010-02-28 21:52:00 Will it still be dual channel if it dosent recognise all the memory. Driftwood (5551)
862243 2010-02-28 21:57:00 I guess it might be dual channel assuming your motherboard is, some are not.

Re: the extra RAM, yes what Speedy says but if at the moment you have enof buffer are you gonna require that?

I have 4GB on 32bit XP but I find that 2GB might be enof for me ....
