I am 22 years old . I've almost completed my BA in Politics and Geography, I'm going to sit A+, CCNA, Network+ and MCAS/MOS this year and I'm trying to plan my future . I want to ask all of you as a collective for your perspectives; what do you think I should do - pursue a particular job or career path - continue to do more study in different areas - continue to study with more specialisation in existing areas (e . g go on to do honours/masters) - something else entirely: write a book, e . t . c ? These are just some of the options I have been considering .

For those of you who enjoy reading, here is some more background on me . . . I am very articulate, I love solving problems, helping and improving what's around me . I like to impress people with my abilities and I often lament that my age and inexperience mean people don't give me the responsibility and authority that I would like . I have ambitions to start my own business; I would like to own a cafe, a condiments production business, a travel website, and a business consulting service . . . so many ambitions but so little I can do to make them happen . Perhaps the biggest thing of all I want to achieve is to write a book . Here's to that .

What do you have to say to me?

Thanks everyone,
Logan .

863885 2010-03-04 01:37:00 BA in Politics and Geography is utterly different from IT.

Are you sure you want a job in information Technology? is this where your passion truly is?

Figure out what you may be passionate about, is your first step.

I'm not sure, no, but it's one of the things I'm good at - one of the things I understand most .

I'm passionate about almost everything -- there's not a lot that I haven't done and enjoyed; it's only ever working with unfriendly people that puts me off . I love learning and doing something new, having the breadth of understanding and experience is amazing and I will always seek that out . It's the main reason I did the BA rather than holding onto my IT knowledge and becoming hyper specialised .

863887 2010-03-04 02:06:00 Should be tena koutu, tena koutu katoa

You sound quite young and full of ideas and ambitions, but you will have to learn to prioritize. Why not go for your Masters in the most favourite subject and persue an academic career?

Oh, yeah, I missed the katoa - but it is koto rather than koutu isn't it? I did enrol for Te Reo once but I withdrew because of a timetable clash .

Put simply - I'm not interested in an academic career . I think that I am more active than one has the ability to be in academia . That is to say, that I don't want to comment on an issue - I want to be one making or breaking the issue . So, if I were to do any post-graduate study it would only be from the perspective of it advancing my interests in a subject .

I am full of ideas and ambitions, that's for sure . It is as much a burden as it is a blessing, for every idea that I have that people appreciate there are others that I have no chance to act on; I live with a constant sense of lost oppurtunity ;)

TRAVEL for a couple of years and get perspective of the whole world, not just NZ . .

As for career, you may find your OE changes your views, however if IT interests you, I would concentrate on connectivity, virtualisation and web commerce .

Can't see any of those courses being useful at all for cafes, condiments businesses or travel .

How about go travel for a bit first, then decide which of the businesses you want to do when you get back and forget IT altogether .

If you really were passionate about IT you wouldn't even be asking .
