Hi Tony, Orticon in the ear.

I believe behind the ear are better, you do get a trial period and if you are not happy as I was with the first in the ear, more of an ear plug than a hearing aid.

The first one I paid for myself cost $2,300.00 left ear only, it lasted 5 years and Pensions have paid for it's replacement at $750.00 (wholesale to Ear Specialist).

Gold Card gets you $1,000.00 I believe off the price, thanks to Winnie lol.

770189 2009-05-05 05:08:00 Lurking, I did CMT in 1958 at Papakura. Had a great time, as sergeant in charge of the Signals platoon. We had no Sigs officer so I became 'acting'. Radios we used were rubbish by todays standard, but I remember we talked to McMurdo Sound one night. Must have been a fluke.
We fired nothing bigger than a Bren during training, but I remember a demonstration put on for us at Waiouru by a Centurion tank. Fired HE tracer and AP at a 44 gal drum on a distant hill. What was amazing was that you could actually see the shells on their trajectory. Bloody quick but still visible.

Found it an excellent experience all round, and I feel sorry that it isn't still a part of all young men's education.

RIchard, greatest period of my life, a shame it petered out.

You name it, we fired it, or threw it. Great stuff, except for the eardrums.

One in every five bullets was a tracer, machine guns were fantastic, we fired those out to sea at Himitangi Beach.

Six and two pounders were also tracer embued, used to knock down cabbage trees at Dabba up on Desert Road.

Regards,

770191 2009-05-05 06:07:00 I think we all went into Army training as callow youths who thought we knew it all. The instuctors soon knocked that out of us and after a couple of weeks we became proud of even our platoon drill skills! The opportunity to learn other skills was important to us as well, such as how to get on with a really diverse group of hutmates and develop relationships, how to overcome the dread of the confidence courses, and then the weapon training and 3 day excercises in places like Paradise Valley (not) without sleep. Drinking in the Sergeants Mess was something to probably forget, but I am sure all the guys who participated and kept out of the 'glasshouse' for their whole time training, remember it as a highlight of their life. The last week we were in camp they asked for volunteers for the Regular Army. I was very tempted, but the thought of being posted to Waiouru changed my mind. I know that I finished my training a much more confident and mature soul than when I started, and I guess that was true for all. If I was 18 or 19 I'd do it again!:thumbs: Richard (739)
770192 2009-05-05 06:26:00 Well, I've had the test, and it looks like I'm going to be up for $4900 (after Winston's subsidy) for two behind-the-ear aids, with rechargeable batteries. I'm getting them fitted next week, so I'll report back again when I've given them a go. My hearing loss is moderate, and similar in each ear. After discussion it didn't seem necessary to go for the top of the line jobbies.
So far my experience at Bay Audiology has been fine.

770196 2009-05-08 09:47:00 Whats silly about saying sounds like fun firing taxpayer bullets. I admire people who join the armed forces although I wouldn't last long in the services because I couldnt take orders never have.
I have to buy my own, nothing would please me more than being able to fire some free bullets. Being govt ball ammo they would buy it at only a few cents a round.
I would much rather fire a gun than have sex which is the only thing I have in common with Governor Palin.
