770412 2009-05-06 07:24:00 On PC screen they look fine, but once printed then transferred to certian products, you see flaws in the image - hazy look, some colours are out of whack, the quality being quite poor...and I'm wanting to set up a small hobby / business for local craft markets and local souviner shops and having some items with local enviroment photos will sell well...

This only seems to occur if I'm taking photos outside of the enviroment - i took the pics between 1pm and 3pm, and I'll upload a couple if someone tells me how to upload to imagef1...

Photos taken inside or close up of our daughter etc come out quite vibrant which is good....am happy with those but when you look at them from a business angle, the thoughts of quality does change...

770413 2009-05-06 08:19:00 Someone let this man how to upload to pressf1 :D

If they appear to be fine on the computer, then the issue may be with the printery. What do you mean by business angle?

When you transfer stuff to other software that can be an issue each software has their own interpretation.

Out of interest what color space are you using? sRGB, AdobeRGB? I find that on mine I use Adobe software which is great but once I use Window Explorer to view them they colors go out of wack. If you are using Firefox to view them, get a color management plugin installed. Ie., open the same image with FF with the plugin and open the same image with IE and see the diff.

I will also want to have a look at them in my various softwares too. You may have crossed into a v complex issue of color management :D $$$ labs tend to use professional software that can read your color profile and IMO I think the best is print yourself with Adobe software with a calibrated monitor so they really match and you have full control.

770414 2009-05-06 09:30:00 I honestly dont know what colourspace I use - but I use Corel Draw X3 graphics suite for editing and then printing straight to printer...

I have found that If i print photos i find online the high resolution websites, they come out nice, photos of family come out nice, even photos from other people come out nice....
but the nature photos come out hazy and the blue sky appears purplish....and after you mentioned colour management, if I change the settings in X3 the sky changes to a more purplish...so obviously the printer is printing right i assume?

I have Adobe CS3 suite but hate it so stuck with X3.....

If you want I can email you photos so you can see....

what i mean by business angle....if I was just printing the photos for my personal photo album, i wouldnt be here lol, but the photos i'm taking I want to sell on products therefore i'm rejecting them...

770416 2009-05-07 11:51:00 A good place to start might be with Consumers Institute reports. They do regular tests on Digital cameras and and their magazine carries slightly cut-down versions of the test results. The full results are given on their web page consumer.org.nz but these can be accessed by subscribers only.
Depending on what type of camera you want you might like to check out compact zooms where a few of the better ones cost $400 or less. I bought a Canon SX 100 IS (8.1 MP, 10x optical zoom, good rap from Consumer) last August for $360. That was discounted because of the upcoming replacement SX 110 IS but there might be a few around still. It has aperture and shutter priority and full manual settings plus a host of other features that only a semi-pro or better would know when and how to use. I haven't used it a lot but it seems to take pretty good pics (but I'm not in your league). The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 got a similar rating and has similar specs but was dearer though it may be at run-out pricing by now. A lot of Panasonics have Leica lenses so those should be pretty good.
