2018-06-04 04:39:00 | I was searching through the Queens Birthday Honours List looking for my name and new title, which however was conspicuous by its absence. :annoyed: Nevertheless, I see where the top Honour went to a Sex Worker. Id love to have heard the conversation between the Queen and Phillip on that one. Ill bet the Bloody Antipodes was mentioned somewhere. HERE (www.nzherald.co.nz)

The Queen and hubby wouldn't have cared, let alone discuss it, it's the New Zealand Order of Merit now remember. Anyway the awards to some are ridiculous, the necessity of having a certain number of recipients perhaps? |

2018-06-04 08:17:00 | The Queen and hubby wouldn't have cared, let alone discuss it, it's the New Zealand Order of Merit now remember. I wouldn't bet on it. :D "On 8 March 2009 it was announced that The Queen had given approval for the reinstatement of the titles of Knight and Dame Grand Companion and Knight and Dame Companion. The first appointments to the redesignated levels were made in The Queens Birthday Honours on 31 May 2009."

2018-06-04 08:33:00 | no politician deserves one for doing the job they are paid well to do. I actually agree with Gary on something :banana Back to the broader issue though ... One News breathlessly announced that this year was the first time there were more women than men recipients of the Queens Birthday honours. Ummmm am I missing something? Do we now have an official quota wherein the fairer sex must have greater numbers than the men? I thought if we are to congratulate the recipients at all, it should be on the basis they have earned the honour, not because they have met any virtue-signalling criterion dreamed up by the current PM, whose office runs the Awards system? And surely it is fast approaching the time when we overhaul the entire system. Why should politicians - or anyone for that matter - receive an honour for doing the job they are paid to do? Sure - let's acknowledge contribution to the arts and entertainment ... but isn't the fact that most entertainers are in it for the money, and that should suffice in itself to be reward enough. The Topp Twins are nice enough people, but exceptional entertainers? I think not. John Rowles really hasn't been heard of for years. I think not. Why do we honour a Waka carver and not the high achievements of some of our Americas Cup designers? Look down the list of "Services to ..." No disrespect to the people there, but isn't it scraping the bottom of the barrel to acknowledge a quilt maker? An ex sex worker? All this year's list has done is to denigrate the achievements of those whose talents are real or tangible. Or those in public service whose lasting achievements have been knowing what to kiss and when.

2018-06-04 09:58:00 | Just to respond to one of WalOne's points - Hec Busby is far more than a "waka carver". I have no idea whether any of the award winners are worthy of an honour, and I am angry that we went back to the colonial system rather than keeping our own awards; my view is that knight and damehoods are dreadful anachronisms. However if anyone deserved some kind of honour in the current list, Hec Busby does. Not only has he been a significant reviver of the ocean going waka tradition, he is an acknowledged navigator in the traditional Pacific system, and he is a renowned inspiration to young people and is passing on his traditional knowledge and skills. Just my two bob's worth on that point. | John H (8) | |
2018-06-04 10:24:00 | My name was missing, too. I'd have been surprised if it had been there. Maybe I took a wrong turning in not fitting into the category of sex worker or quilt maker. Others probably have more appreciation of their contribution. However I am extremely proud of my cousin's "for services to......" award. He is one of those people who has a genuine interest in helping people, particularly youth, without any thought of boosting his own ego. Despite the fact that there will always be the inclusion of some of whom we raise our eyebrows, I am sure many, if not most, are probably deserving. In a lot of cases it is small reward and recognition for a lot of many years where they have made a difference to the lives of others. That's my two bob's worth.

2018-06-04 11:44:00 | John and Marnie ... I did not set out to disparage Busby. I knew of him in the early 60s when I was working in the heart of Ngpuhi country, but his achievements did not start to come about for 30 years after. That "he is one of those people who has a genuine interest in helping people, particularly youth, without any thought of boosting his own ego" (Marnie) is good reason enough to recognise Busby. But I stand by my comments concerning the other recipients announced today. I don't think - or know - that they are altruistic enough to fit the description Marnie offered of Busby. Forget our politicians; I don't agree our country should award anachronistic knighthoods as a rite of political passage. Neither should we honour our top sports people just for being at the top of their game. Let's instead reward in a meaningful way those who have brought recognition in the most favourable fashion of our country and its people. Two bit entertainers such as the Topps or Rowles don't deserve our second highest honour in my opinion. And if Busby is deserving of high recognition, then it is to my mind denigrating to him to be in the company of the others. So let's think Malvina Major, Apirana Ngata, Kiri Te Kawana, John Kirwan, Ed Hillary, et al ... as the yardsticks for future recognition of admired and respected Kiwis. By raising the standard, the honours system becomes exclusive once more and of value to the recipient. Forget a quota system, equal numbers of men or women. Forget any target numbers. If we haven't the talent or achievers to reward, then wait until someone who does deserve recognition surfaces.
