Higher GST rates, a smaller market and high transportation costs accounted for some but not all of the difference, researcher Jessica Wilson said.

"For some goods, Kiwi consumers are paying a premium."

and.....
Pricing on both the Australian and New Zealand online KMart stores bucked the trend - no significant price difference were seen on items we checked and in several cases speakers we compared were the same price, meaning they were actually cheaper in New Zealand once currency adjustments had been made.

Yep, we ARE being screwed.

1450228 2018-06-03 06:50:00 Just did a comparison yesterday - Our vacuum cleaner is on its last bag in the box, To buy here in NZ you pay $25 for 4 bags and filters. To get the same bags from Aliexpress, its $16.33 for 10 (postage included). Do the maths. Even if and when the gst thing comes on / added, if the govt manage to get it going, its still a LOT cheaper to import.

Aliexpress takes 2-3 weeks normally to get items normally.

Sooooo Yep, getting screwed. :(

1450230 2018-06-03 06:59:00 But some of us don’t want to live on “A track never cross’d, ‘cept by those who are lost.” Its NOT :D very Often we agree on something But this time it IS.

Prices in NZ for some things are damn WAY over the top.

Take some replacement parts for laptops -- The other week, got a Price for a persons Power Socket for their HP laptop ( from HP NZ). To buy it in NZ was $75. To import it from Aliexpress (exact same part - brand new) $15 to the door.

Guess what I told HP to do ;)

1450232 2018-06-03 08:29:00 I just bought a mower sprint filter, spark plug, primer and carb diaphragm kit on eBay for 5 NZ dollars. A similar filter alone, at Bunnings, was about 20 dollars. So yes...prices are way overboard...

But I see that Amazon (www.theguardian.com) (Guardian News)will now prevent Aussies from easily buying from their massive USA store. Big shots like Harvey Norman (the man himself) has been cracking up (www.nzherald.co.nz)about Amazon not paying fair share of Aussies taxes. So maybe HN and others counteract by raising prices in NZ.

1450233 2018-06-03 08:51:00 We know that we are and have been screwed fro the last 50 years at least.
We all know the reasons, small market, long distance, freight costs for delivery around NZ.
But how much extra is fair, and how much extra is us being screwed,
Some things like beer which is not imported is also very dear compared to Europe and the UK.

More importantly what can we do about it.
I have often thought about setting up a website or forum or blog to share some of the rips off in a permanent way.
And to come up with strategies to reduce the rip offs.

I think the average family could be say 50 to $100 a week better off if the rips offs were reduced.
That is better than a wage rise!

Its really a bit off topic, but the upshot may be that the Aussie government and the NZ governments will apply GST at the border, ie via customs. If the big giants will not play ball. After all it is the end user (Consumer) who is suppose to pay the GST.
That will be very time consuming and very expensive.
