| 1448063 | 2018-04-03 17:47:00 | Running Linux Mint and my WSKY WiFi adapter, it takes me a few - several times, really - boot-ups to get it to finally run instead of flashing it's Morse Code blinks that tells me that it is in distress and won't work this time, try again . :waughh: When I open the WiFi Manager, I get a report that tells my I used my WiFi 9, 13 and 21 days ago . That's a lie . I can see a list of available WiFi routers around me - some are over a mile away, so there's something to be said about the short antenna on that little device - right? OK - I ran a query to Linux asking for what it had as RF Kills (as follows) joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~/Desktop $ rfkill list all 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~/Desktop $ I attempt this and get no answer: joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~/Desktop $ lsmod | grep iwl joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~/Desktop $ I HEAR that using this Terminal command will work - but so far I have shied away from it : sudo service network-manager restart OK - while beating myself - a daily experience with this WSKY hang-up, I actually tried the above command and got a list of wireless networks that appear under the wireless icon, but even if it says I am connected to one of them I am unable to access internet at that moment . I tried to ping 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 which shows a 100% packet loss when I cannot get on, otherwise it gets me this: joseph@SurfersMintu1 ~/Desktop $ ping 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 PING 8 . 8 . 8 . 8 (8 . 8 . 8 . 8) 56(84) bytes of data . . . . when I am on WiFy and it's running correctly . . . . like right this minute . Oh yeah - you might have noticed that I added a Bluetooth stubby-mini USB adapter and I can report that is running just fine and dandy - it even installed everything it needed immediately when I plugged it it . That was a kick in the head! Love it . Now on to the WiFi issue that really bugs me although with persistence and effort each morning - only takes a few more minutes to boot up multiple times to get things all up-n-running . Should I try running a VPN? Any thoughts? |

Try lsusb instead 2.In the past when having issues with network-manager I have used wicd instead, it is an alternative to network-manager and is sometimes better at making and maintaining a connection it is available in synaptic I think, not using Mint today so haven't checked that. If you decide to try it you should disable network-manager, not remove it, instructions to do so are in the second post in this Mint forum thread forums.linuxmint.com that way if wicd is no better you can re-enable network-manager, also removing n-m apparently breaks cinnamon |

| 1448067 | 2018-04-04 05:12:00 | Hey Joe, None of that information gave us much. When dealing with WiFi usb adapters, the most useful information for us is the chip they used in the device. This can then be checked whether it has built in support from the kernel or whether the manufacturer has released the drivers for it. Another thing to understand is whether you run it directly off the computer and to know that it is getting enough power to run it. So to figure out what chip is used, the easiest is to unplug the device, then plug it back in and do: dmesg | tail It should list specific information about that USB device, if you could post the output on that, it should help. If nothing USB related showed, it may not be detected, possibly under powered too, try another port if possible and do the above command. The output of lsusb may help too after the dmesg command. |

| 1448069 | 2018-04-04 12:46:00 | Ahh, I see in your update information that it wants to remove kernels not needed. This would suggest you updated your kernel but your driver (which I assume you built) would need to be recreated again. If you go to the location where you build the drivers, you should do: make clean make make install I'm not sure what the module is called that you just created but you will need to do: sudo modprobe <drivers modules goes here> That should hopefully fix the issue, normally will reoccur if you do another kernel update, so you may need to remember these steps each time it gets in distress. |

OK youse guys! This time I followed all the information here and guess what? IT'S FIXED!!!!! (not gonna c/p 'happy happy' x 200 etc this time). Kame: I think you think that I have a lot more under my belt with Linux - I'm on it - but I am still in the n00b stage (with a lot of help from youse guys! ) |
