772140 2009-05-08 04:28:00 Can anybody link me a site which tells me 100% correctly about High Definiton. I have been told so many different things about high def like "this resolution is true high def" & "1080p means true high def" but no details have ever been consistent with each other.

Thanks in advance for solving my nightmare!

772141 2009-05-08 04:58:00 1080p, or 1920x1080, is Full HD, while 720p, or 1280x720 is still high def. :) pcuser42 (130)
772142 2009-05-08 05:06:00 so whats the deal with something thats 1080p with 1920 x 1200 resolution? Nictech (14748)
772143 2009-05-08 05:08:00 It can display 1080p pixel-for-pixel (i.e. without having to shrink it). pcuser42 (130)
772144 2009-05-08 05:11:00 I think anything equal to or greater than 1280x720 is hi-def.
True hi-def is 1920x1080, at the moment, as that is the highest resolution for blu-ray etc.
When a new, higher res comes out then I guess that will change :waughh:

772145 2009-05-08 05:30:00 so 1080p with 1920 x 1200 res is better than 1080p with 1920 x 1080 res? I'm pretty sure this is correct :) Nictech (14748)
772146 2009-05-08 05:33:00 Well most only go as high as 1920*1080. So dont know where the extra 120 goes Speedy Gonzales (78)
772147 2009-05-08 05:37:00 The extra 120 pixels are wasted with black bars appearing there. pcuser42 (130)
772148 2009-05-08 05:55:00 so 1080p with 1920 x 1200 res is better than 1080p with 1920 x 1080 res? I'm pretty sure this is correct :)

1920x1200 is a 16:10 resolution. 1920x1080 is a 16:9 resolution. True HD, as others have said is 1920x1080. 1920x1200 is used in monitors because the extra vertical space is useful for displaying the taskbar, web browsing, displaying media player controls etc. No TVs as far as I know go beyond 1920x1080.

1280x720 is also HD, but not Full/True HD. The pc monitor equivalent is 1280x800 (used commonly on laptops)

16:10 is also closer to the golden ratio than 16:9, so apparently it makes the monitors more asthetically pleasing... :p
