Is broadband going to be something that is like, use at your own risk? Seeing that these days missing internet banking deadlines and other payments, online investments and the use of voip for many can be considered a telephone .

I find that my broadband goes offline maybe weekly, I am with Xnet it may of went offline just before today prior to 11am .

Regards .

772090 2009-05-08 00:21:00 Seems like a fair declaration by Xnet for a commitment of service - you can't expect more than a "best effort" when there are so many links in the chain between you and the outside world, the failure of any one of which could cause the service to be disrupted... johcar (6283)
772091 2009-05-08 00:31:00 I think it's Xnet that's giving you the problem. I'm also having 'disconnections' fairly frequently especially at night. The disconnections are very brief most of the time - most often, click "retry" a couple of times and sometimes, close and restart the browser will get it back. This 'micro-outages' occurs not only to one computer but also to other computer as well. I therefore think that my computers are OK. However, Xnet's helpdesk thinks that the problem is with my computers!

Anyway, I've decided to leave Xnet for another ISP and most probably will go to Telecoms. Have compared Telecom and Orcon and Telecom seems to be cheaper and their 'after sales' support I reckon will be better. I maybe wrong but that's the decision I have made.

Telecom's 3 months free promotion has just gone and I'll wait till the end of the month and see whether there's another promotion??

772092 2009-05-08 00:39:00 So understandably if it was a elderly person, it would be best to have a landline and or a mobile phone? Ie., if health and commercial interest are at focus.

Before I thought it was great having some forms of VOIP if I had my own place and it was cheaper, all tied to a digital connection, now I am thinking that even if I pay a bit more, maybe I would prefer a landline. Further to that I only get a slight discount with VOIP providers cos they don't really provide naked ADSL they package it up with some form of VOIP. Or simply use a cellphone for more calls and get Woosh cos they have real naked ADSL. Not the best but for casual surfing and email should be fine which is all I use it for and admin tasks like financial.

772093 2009-05-08 02:46:00 I have not had the "Mini-outage" problem with XNet in 12 months, but I may have a couple of differences to you.
Using the 'Fusion' service.
A UPS on the Modem and computer supply.
No Microsoft stuff allowed to look at the web (except when I am in thrill-seeker mode and want to live dangerously). ;)

And? I suggest making sure the bills are paid before the last minute.
Can't blame outages for missed payments.

772095 2009-05-08 03:19:00 Not last minute. Well what about business as usual events, not bill payments, but financial investments and stuff like that .... doing work at home and sending it to work etc .. relying on voip as a telephone. Calling home from overseas via voip at a cafe etc...

Or is it that outages are expected with internet and it should be treated as a secondary tool.
Ie., is it plausible to cancel a phoneline and rely on the internet.

772096 2009-05-08 05:59:00 It has been several years since xtra/telecom have had an outage (I live in Christchurch). Last time it happened (years ago) it was resolved within several hours and they credited us the month's bill.

From what I've heard about xnet on this forum, it isn't very good.
