771607 2009-05-07 01:23:00 Just got a brand new HP workstation here, and I noticed in the BIOS that the SATA controller mode was set to IDE rather than AHCI.

I changed it, rebooted, let windows install the controller, and rebooted again, and it seems quicker (could be my imagination, but I know AHCI enables the use of NCQ).

Funny thing is, I'm sure I read somewhere that you couldn't switch from a legacy IDE mode to AHCI without a re-install, or hacking the registry?

And is there a noticeable improvement in performance when using AHCI?

771608 2009-05-07 01:51:00 If the install of Windows had drivers for both IDE & AHCI then no need to reinstall. CYaBro (73)
771609 2009-05-07 03:10:00 If its Vista it'll work straight off the bat, for XP if you have AHCI drivers installed it should work straight away.

In device manager right click the hard drive>properties and make sure in the policies tab Advanced performance and Write caching is enabled.

Speeds it up quite a bit

771610 2009-05-07 03:30:00 Thats what I may do with this once I make a slipstreamed cd with the SATA drivers.

Think I'll change over to 64 bit (XP). Thats good enough for me
