864716 2010-03-10 10:04:00 Sweet ! I would say it was either infected or corrupt. And since it hasnt crashed since, I dont think it will later on Speedy Gonzales (78)
864717 2010-03-14 09:42:00 Happy to report that the Tosh is also cured. Thanks Speedy. johcar (6283)
864718 2010-03-14 09:45:00 Cool, thats good to hear ! Speedy Gonzales (78)
864719 2010-03-23 21:57:00 Damn! They're both doing it again!

Where do I go in XP to stop the auto-restart so I can record the stop code when it next blue screens (provided I can access this quick enough before it blue screens)?

I did a format of the HDD on the Vaio and a complete reinstall using the original Recovery Disk . Since this is a fresh install using everything that was intended to be used when the machine was first sold, I suspect a hardware failure of some sort, or a Microsoft update that has seriously broken something (this especially since both machines have been experiencing the same issue since around about the same time) .

Both machines originally started BSOD'ing within a week of each other, and both are about 5 years old . Both have newish Seagate HDDs (about 12 months old) .

Before the Vaio was rebuilt I ran a Malwarebytes scan on it and it seemed to find 4 nasties, but would BSOD before the scan finished . I pulled the HDD out and stuck it in an external enclosure and ran a Malwarebytes scan from my laptop . It found nothing . Formatted the partition and recovered and updated via Microsoft Update .

The Tosh has also been rebuilt using its Recovery Disk . Very similar issue .

864720 2010-03-23 21:58:00 Press the windows key + pause / advanced tab. Bottom option Speedy Gonzales (78)
864721 2010-03-23 22:03:00 You need Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and recovery > Settings. Turn off auto restart. Sweep (90)
864722 2010-03-23 22:05:00 Got it - thanks Speedy. [EDIT] and Sweep....

I guess if it's a hardware issue, the machines are at an age where it's probably not cost-effective to repair them...

Still leaning towards a MS Update issue though...

864723 2010-03-24 08:19:00 The latest update.

Managed to get the Vaio running long enough to change the auto-restart option, so when it blue-screened I could see all the message.

Took a photo of it and turned the damn thing off.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL .......

STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x0000047B,0x00000002,0x00000001,0xF741EE9F)

NDIS.sys - Address F741EE9F base at F7406000, datestamp 48025d03Google doesn't help very much....

I also managed to get it to boot into Safe Mode (where is seems pretty stable).

Opened System Information and looked at IRQs under Hardware Resources, since the message appears to be pointing at a conflict in this area.

It seems that the following devices are all using IRQ 9:

Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Generic CardBus Controller
Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio

The statuses all show OK in Safe Mode and in Safe Mode with Networking...

There are no devices using IRQ 2 - 7 or IRQ 10 - don't know whether that is relevant.

864724 2010-03-24 08:36:00 Also just noticed in the Event Viewer that there is an Info record which states "The system has detected that network adapter \DEVICE|TCPIP_{insert nasty long alpha-numeric string in here} was disconnected from the network and the adapter's network configuration has been released...." This while booted in Safe Mode with Networking (I think) johcar (6283)
864725 2010-03-24 08:57:00 So its the same file. Umm, where did you get the NIC install file from? Is there one on the Sony site?

Looks like these Vaios and that Ndis.sys file like crashing (www.google.co.nz)
