864519 2010-03-06 22:20:00 Hmm wouldnt be surprised if Nortons made it crash. If it started crashing after you installed this. Since it looks like Nortons can give you that stop error (www.google.co.nz). Is this the AV or Nortons Internet security? Will it boot into safe mode?

Wouldn't boot to safe mode either

864520 2010-03-06 22:25:00 Reboot press F8, then select last known good config. Then see if it boots. If it does uninstall Nortons Speedy Gonzales (78)
864521 2010-03-06 22:55:00 I couldn't find a linux boot disc but found an old Winternals one which is just as good and boots to a stripped down Windows Desktop. At least that's something - Yep save the data, easier to do it now than regret it later, then worry about fixing the other drive/Problem.

I'm just making up the new Winternals now -- Its actually ERD commander 2010. Just having to download the new WDK -- Cant find the old one :crying

The other disc is worse. The one with the OS. I connected it to another computer and after I started that one up, chkdsk ran automatically and after 27% through is showing heaps of file segment unreadable errors. So the disc appears to be badly corrupted.

There is some data I'd like to get off it as well so maybe will have to get a data recovery specialist to look at it if no luck today.

864523 2010-03-07 01:51:00 Failed sectors on a drive will throw up errors as well.

IF you dont feel comfortable recovering data or know what you are doing - then STOP - any further actions may cause it to be lost - I did a data recovery yesterday (or tried) Some People don't listen to advice given - NOW only part of their data was recoverable. :groan:

Lets just say a certain receptionist is going to be in trouble tomorrow when I take the PC back -- Her boss will not be happy ;)

After a very long chkdsk and a lot of error fixing, I was able to get all the important data off it and it looks good *phew!!!* .

Thanks for all your replies everyone, will be looking at replacing the older computer now .
