2010-03-06 22:36:00 My computer, about six months old but still running Windows XP, will not now recognise USB mass storage devices. Three memory sticks and a portable hard drive will not register. There is no icon for the drives in 'my computer'. I have been through the troubleshooting process and all I get is that the mass storage devices are working properly etc etc. Got to the end of this, and it can't help. Help! Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
2010-03-06 22:51:00 go into device manager and uninstall all/anything related to usb/mass storage devices

reboot and it should reinstall the drivers for them

2010-03-06 23:26:00 Did you install a service pack?? SP1+ needs to be installed, for USB 2 to work properly Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-03-06 23:28:00 also check disk management in computer management in administrative tools. My mates pc had some setting changed so it would not automatically mount any attached drives unless told to. nedkelly (9059)
2010-03-07 00:58:00 Okay, further to this, I think I uninstalled stuff during the troubleshooting process, nothing happened. I just used the system restore, because it was accepting devices last week. It recognises my Walkman -- just plugged that in a few minutes ago, plugged in the portable hard drive, got a message saying found new hardware, your hardware is now installed and ready to use, but still no icon. The icon for the Walkman turned up -- but nothing for the hard drive. Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
2010-03-07 01:02:00 So, did you or didnt you install a SP? I would update it first then see if things work Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-03-07 03:35:00 Windows XP service pack 2 ?? We have that. Is that what you mean. But I've done nothing in the time it stopped recognising. And my kid's lego! memory stick works. Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
2010-03-07 04:20:00 I had a similar problem (www.pressf1.co.nz) not long ago. Still not resolved. FoxyMX (5)
2010-03-07 04:28:00 See if this fixes it (support.microsoft.com). Its for XP Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-03-07 04:53:00 Foxy look in windowsupdate is there an update for Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader?? If there is, did it succeed or fail? If it failed, you may have to do this (windows.microsoft.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
