774908 2009-05-18 08:34:00 I just bought my first ever electric shaver today. Actually I asked my brother to buy it for me and he bought the most damn expensive model available in New Zealand! haha

Anyway, I tried it out today and man oh man... it's sure gonna take a bit of learning after using a wet razor after 30 years!

774914 2009-05-18 09:08:00 A good (usually expensive) electric shaver will last more than 10 years, although $450 seems steep.
I would have bought a goodie at Briscoes by waiting till they are half price.

What model did you get?

774915 2009-05-18 09:15:00 I've only used a Philishave like 15yrs ago which is still working.

Just want to know, if modern electric shavers can do the following. Over the years I have preferred manual shavers because I get a smoother softer refreshing shave on the skin. Occasionally when I do use the Philishave, it does not feel refreshing and the skin kinda feels dry and when you look at it, it has white flaking on the face / chin. How good are modern electrics in that regard?

774916 2009-05-18 09:19:00 Yeah, a dry shave can cut and burn, and cause a rash, which has taken my face many years to harden to.
A wet shave however only causes rare cuts if I'm careless.

However, the dry foil cuts off the equivalent of 6 or so extra hours of growth compared to a wet blade. ie the foil gives a much closer cut. While it might be a pain (literally, your lady at least will probably appreciate the difference.

Sudden crazy thought - anybody ever wax their facial hair?

774917 2009-05-18 09:44:00 I have yet to find an electric razor that gives a smooth shave. I use electric out of convenience. I don't shave on Saturdays and use a mach 3 on Sundays.

Seriously, despite all the claims, it doesn't matter how many twisy, turny, uppy, downy, "actually pulls your hairs up and then cuts them" bits and bobs a shaver has, nothing beats a real shave.
