774684 2009-05-17 20:37:00 What did you think of Mike King's expose on the conditions some farmers keep pigs in ?

I thought it was disgusting and a very bad reflection on NZ.

I could not understand the Minister for Agriculture sating he will wait 6 months fro a report !

(This all comes back to competing with low cost overseas imports - or is it just greedy farmers ?)

774685 2009-05-17 20:56:00 It comes down to this - supermarkets put a huge amount of pressure on producers for cheap meat. If local farmers don't cut costs the way they're doing now, then they will just import it from countries with lower standards than we have. It's already happening - we import 43.5% of our pork consumed annually - if local farmers are forced to improve standards well above their competitors overseas, then they will simply go out of business.

Change will only happen it consumers demand it - if consumers only buy free range or other ethically raised pork, then supermarkets will get the message and buy good pork. If consumers only focus on cost, then so will they.

774686 2009-05-17 21:15:00 I was disgusted and I cant work out why the pigs in that farm aren't released right now.
The farmers are not capable of writing a decent code of care of pigs so the the SPCA should do it for them. Typical minister call for another stupid report what an ass.
Two things should happen battery hens and caged pigs should be outlawed and only ethical pork could be imported from overseas ie inspectors check the farms it came from.
I dont mind paying more for pork products if these barbaric practices cease.
I dont give a rats arse if farmers here go out of business.

Bang on, Somebody - it's just a shame that supermarkets don't tend to distribute free-range/organic pork readily. Sure you can get it from local producers, but the big chains are missing a golden opportunity to 'ride the wave' that stories like this create.

My local Pak n Save has done a big Free Range chicken promotion recently - I bought a couple, but to be honest couldn't taste the difference between it and conventionally produced (barn raised) chicken. IN terms of supermarkets not distributing free range meat - ultimately, if you buy your meat from somewhere else, supermarkets will get the message.

prefect: Do you buy or eat bacon, ham, or other pork product? If so, do you buy ethically produced meat (a large number of brands use cheaply produced imported pork, produced in very poor conditions)? What about eggs? Chicken? Icecream (chicken fat)?

Banning "bad" imported pork and setting high local standards, while sounding all nice and fluffy, will actually have huge implications for families on low incomes. Farmers produce meat this way because it's cheap - if they all have to go free range (or some compromise in between), then that'll add to the cost of pork, and have flow-on effects to other products which use pork (sausages, bacon, ham, etc. etc.).

Again, rather than taking the Green party stance of banning everything they can get their hands on, it's down to consumers voting with their wallets. That's what sends the strongest message.

PS: I'm not a farmer.

Yeah I do eat above pork products, I just said the government should ban battery hens and caging pigs. Not rocket science.
Once they are banned I will know by buying NZ pork its ok then wont I? I dont need to buy eggs in fact I give them away during the summer.
Stop being an apologist for cruel farmers.
Farmers who do battery hens and pig crate farming are scum and need putting in jail for animal cruelty.
My Dad his dad and so on going back to England as far back as the 1400s were farmers. If my Dad did **** like that I would disown him.
