773912 2009-05-14 23:10:00 In looking at the other thread about Autumn 09 desktops, I see that most have a very uncluttered screen. My desktop by contrast has about 150 icons used to access all sorts of programs, sorted to some extent by program type.

How do you guys with clean desktops access your programs? Do you use 'Start' 'All Programs' then find the one you want? Do you have a secondary desktop with all your icons? Do you open your browser and go to Bookmarks/Favourites?

The reason I have everything on the desktop is that I thought it was the fastest means of access. If there is a better way, point me to it!:confused:

773913 2009-05-14 23:18:00 i group my icons on the desktop and put them into folders on the desktop but also any apps I use frequently are in quick launch toolbar. Bantu (52)
773914 2009-05-14 23:20:00 I use executor for running my programs, or the Superbar on W7 has all my programs.

I also use Appetizer now, a cool dock.

RocketDock is also quite nice.

I have no desktop icons.

If you want to try to declutter your desktop try out Stardock fences.

773915 2009-05-14 23:22:00 Yeah, I have a massive quick launch. A two-layer task bar allows easy access to a lot of stuff.

I also would normally have a folder called, eg, word docs, and all the word docs would be in there, ISOs in the ISO folder, you get the idea.

I don't like having a cluttered desktop.

Its just a preference. I hate cluttered desktops. Spoils the background picture.

And you have what - 150 programs installed that you use? Or do you just make shortcuts to things like webpages as well? I hate that, just bookmark/add to favorites.

I have the most often used as quicklaunch icons in the taskbar - then I remove them from Programs and desktop.
Next most used is desktop icons, I remove those from quicklauch and Programs.

Then whats left is in Programs and nowhere else.
Built into Windows stuff I never use, I remove the listing from Programs.

So desktop is kept tidy and same wiht Start - Programs. Cause I hate enormous listings in there too.

SHould I suddenly need to access a program I have no icon or listing for (unlikely), I can just browse and runs its .exe.

Speed is all dependent on your PCs specs, not how you access something.

773917 2009-05-15 00:05:00 My taskbar only has Firefox in it, My desktop has no shortcuts just a couple folders of my current work, whatever that happens to be at the time.

Start menu I have segmented into 4 or 5 categories but I have few programs installed, I uninstall anything I don't use or like.

After looking at that pic I would consider yours fairly cluttered:-)
Maybe it is the picture that makes it look like that I don't know.

Mine is set to classic desktop and the old windows 95 green standard colour on most of my pc's.

Daughter has an animated desktop she made herself then a screensaver she made kicks in with heaps of photos of tv celebs she did in photoshop. Her animated desktop is a bit annoying

773919 2009-05-15 00:23:00 On Windows 7, I have all my commonly used programs on the taskbar.

On Vista, I use a combination of desktop icons (for some more commonly used programs), and the start menu. The search bar in the start menu makes it very quick for me to launch programs from the start menu - just hit the "start" key on my keyboard and start typing.

773920 2009-05-15 00:29:00 Yup, I use rocketdock, and add whatever I need to it. Then, I delete the icons from the desktop and from all programs. Rocketdock is on autohide, so I wont see the programs, till I click up the top of the screen Speedy Gonzales (78)
773921 2009-05-15 00:30:00 I keep my desktop clear most of the time.

I use the desktop when I am working on a project, I drag/dump and save to the desktop, then delete or file away when finished.

Websites are bookmarked or typed into the address bar, applications are accessed via the start menu.

I also dont have many applications installed that are not used on a regular basis. Things like iso burning, malware/spyware software is only installed when I need it, I will always download the latest version. In case you are wondering I only scan for spyware 1 or two times a year or when needed.

When I have to repair someones computer I normally put the files into their documents folder then delete all other shortcuts, well ccleaner does this for me.
