2010-03-09 19:25:00 | Which cpu will run hotter? A 2.0ghz Celeron or a 2.4 Pentium 4? | nedkelly (9059) | |
2010-03-09 19:38:00 | Probably the P4, since the celeron will also be slower | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2010-03-09 19:44:00 | will it be much hotter? I have a HP D530U which is running a 2.0 Celeron and was wondering if it would get much hotter if I stuck my spare 2.4 Pentium into it | nedkelly (9059) | |
2010-03-09 19:51:00 | The other PC here has a 2.4 800 fsb CPU in it. Its probably not that hot right now. (around the mid 30's). Well, I cant see how hot it is, because the flatmate is on it. Only way to find out install it and check the BIOS, if its monitors the temp | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2010-03-09 19:53:00 | Easier way: Install EVEREST Ultimate Edition (Free Trial) or Speccy (Free!) Test for yourself and see :) Under load, things will be different, compared to just sitting idle in the BIOS

2010-03-09 20:05:00 | as of right now the pc is just acting as a webserver running a forum, and also a music storage server. So probably wont make that much difference then. | nedkelly (9059) | |
2010-03-09 22:10:00 | Yeah it'll be sitting pretty much idle all day, not sure it's worth even the time for the upgrade ;) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2010-03-10 03:39:00 | Is it one of those small PCs where everything is crammed in tight and the cooling sucks? If so, I wouldn't bother. The current level of cooling probably wouldn't be even enough for a Celeron. If your Pentium 4 is a Prescott I wouldn't go anywhere near it. On the other hand though, a Pentium 4 will have better performance, and if the cooling is OK then I would say go for it. The other question is will the motherboard support it? I've got an old Slot 1 board here in a Compaq which supports Celeron and nothing else (won't go higher than 66Mhz FSB)
