2010-03-08 23:27:00 | Have a domain with Server 2008 as DC running AD etc. Clients have been all XP until now. Have now implemented some Win 7 machines. All goes well except for deploying the printer. Previous using vbs script to install printer and set as default. Works well on XP but not on Win 7. I believe this is due to Win 7 needing admin rights to install the printer driver. So I created a OU for the Win 7 PCs and created a GP and enabled user configuration /preferences /printers and deployed a shared printer. This resulted in an error that the GP could not be read. I removed this setting under user configuration and in computer configuration set to deploy and IP printer. This still failed with the same error as above. I did some more reading and disabled Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always). This worked but the printer would not accept the print job. Re created the user configuration setting and all worked fine until a reboot of the client when it refused to read the GP again. At this stage I am trying to have the computer configuration setting install the printer driver on the PC and then hopefully the vbs script will run OK and setup the printer as default. This is all very messy and time consuming. Anyone had this issue and have a work around? There is probably some setting to be changed in a GP somewhere but cant find it! Found some info here for reference - second item down from top blogs.technet.com

2010-03-08 23:40:00 | You do have a Win7 driver for the printer? And it is the correct 32bit or 64bit depending on which version of Win7 you are using?

2010-03-09 01:31:00 | There are settings relating to point-and-print restrictions - I can't exactly remember what they are right now, and I can't access my AD right now but you should be able to allow standard users to install printers using point and print - whether this relates to installing on login I'm not sure. I had a lot of trouble with installing printers with a vbs script myself (ie it is just not practical - standard users are unable to do it), but the Group Policy Preferences printer deployment worked fine for me, although I seem to remember looking at point and print policies - maybe you should start there. | ryanjames.powell (13554) | |
2010-03-09 01:38:00 | I have just disabled User Access Control via GP to see if this will allow the printer install. I would prefer to use GP Preferences and will work on this in the future. My needs at the moment are to get a printer installed so users get off my back. I will take a look at ponit and print options. Are you using GP Preferences as User Config or Computer Config? You cannot use the share option in computer config and when I try this I get an error reading the GP but no error when using computer config in GP. Thanks

2010-03-09 02:33:00 | I think I used user config and then applied it to computers by using (I think) the loopback policy. EDIT: No actually I didn't use the loopback policy. User configurations apply to users of computers that they are applied to. So just use the user configurations.

2010-03-09 02:45:00 | Damn I did have the loopback policy enabled but when I removed the user config policy I also removed the loopback policy but have forgot to enable again. I will re enable and see how it goes but will leave it as is for a while until I test with what I have done so far or will loose track!

2010-03-09 02:56:00 | Here is a picture of the policies relating to printers that we apply. Attached file: Win_7_Printers1.jpg (www.imagef1.net.nz) (144 KB) We also merge a registry file on startup which disables point and print restrictions because the group policies don't seem to do it. If you want the .reg file, I can email it to you. Send me a PM. EDIT: I'm not sure which of these policies are actually necessary, because there was a bit of "just set up all the policies you can think of that might work" and now it works as intended.

2010-03-09 03:17:00 | Point and Print restrictions apply more if you want users to be able to find and install printers themselves or if you want to do it with a script. Otherwise the printer deployment preferences should work without changing anything like that. | ryanjames.powell (13554) | |
