Not going to mention that a policeman was shot with one (oops just did) but I gotta say that your wrong about air guns, ive shot some scary air rifles, it really does make you wonder why anyone over 18 can buy them.

I mean technically if someone escaped from a mental institute they could run into a gun shop and legally buy a weapon capable of killing without even showing id

And geekster, theres not much to licenses, you sound like your being sensible about it so go blow some rabbits into chunks!

So if a gun was as dangerous as a car, we would expect about 127 gun deaths a year...........

quite right. people don't care about how many people they kill on the roads. even multiple car deaths barely rate a mention in the papers but if its a shooting incident its all over the news and people start jumping up and down about how dangerous guns are.

getting a gun licence is easy enough. however just be aware that loosing a gun licence means you can't have restricted weapons that are freely available to ordinary person with no licence.

its good to see that your going for your licence. its means you are on record with police and are willing to be a law abiding person. people that discourage people becoming licence holders are simply encouraging people to be criminals.
anyone can get a gun, its good to see that your doing it legally.

773033 2009-05-12 10:03:00 Hi all. As a part of my 18'th bday prezzie, my father is paying for my firearms licence. I'm not too bad with guns, and know about gun safety (ie assume it's loaded and unsafe, always point in a safe direction, don't load until needed, etc). Anything I really need to know? Thanks.

As already said, it's pretty easy. Just make sure you know the basic rules (TALICSA is a very easy way of remembering them) and put down appropriate people for your references. Let them know you will be doing this, as the police will definitely talk to them.

Good luck, happy hunting and safe shooting!

Edit: Learn the difference between a rifle and a gun please.
