Now I am backing up all the videos of about 1.2TB of #4 hdd onto another hdd because the first one is stuttering and balking once in a while. But - here's an interesting part - the SMART report says that "all is well". Hrrumph!!!!:thanks JBOD is nice, but I should make two copies of everything. Hey! Anyone got an extra 2 or 3TB of server space they want to loan me? |

I have often wondered if they will fire up in a few years time if I need to restore the data ! I have never had a hard drive go fail on me. What are the symptoms you are getting you say it is stuttering ! Could us a better description ? |

| 774300 | 2009-05-16 22:49:00 | If I play any of the vids or try to burn another copy, I get dropped frame advance - I mean that the frame freezes and the sound continues on a bit until it has to stop too and wait for the hdd to sync up and get moving again . Somehow I bet that the images are stored in RAM for access while the hdd is normally working in spurts . I swear that I can hear the pick-up humming or something in the hdd case too . Might just be the stepper motor, but the sound of all the cooling fans running like the choppers in the beach scene in Apocalypse Now kinda drown it all out . As far as symptoms: I've noticed that the MP3s are also stop-starting-stopping, again and again, but only on MP3s, not WMA files . Strange . :dogeye: My MP3s are at 128kb rates and the WMAs are huge! Go figger! I did a back-up and (unfortunately) I used the MS/XP-Pro tool and it took me over two days to get just that one hdd saved . What I shouldda done was dump some of the vids I have saved on DVDs first, and that would have dropped a lot of the work the slowly dying hdd had to do . Hopefully I have all the data packets aligned and in order yet . Performed a chkdsk and THAT took a while too after the next re-boot . Now I'm running CCleaner and maybe I'll get a new hdd and ghost what's left onto it and send the back-up into the new <hdd>K then . Maybe I should ask if there's a free back-up program that others use? There's gotta be somethin' better than the Windows tool . |

If things go worse consider the free BartPE (www.nu2.nu) boot disc builder(which you can get plug ins, including for drive image xml to back up to a USB drive). | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||
