773760 2009-05-14 08:24:00 Where is the best place to get some cheap bicycle tubes? I want to get some spare tubes because I have got a few punctures a long walk away from home & it gets very annoying.

My bike uses the narrow road tyres & all the tubes I have found use a different type of valve to my current ones. Does that matter or do I have to get teh same valve as I currently have?

773762 2009-05-14 08:41:00 Surely the tube will have to fit inside the tyre.

The valve is part of the tube.

To insert air into the tube you need a connection that will fit the valve and adapt to whatever pump.

773763 2009-05-14 09:00:00 Get some 'thorn proof' tubes. They cost about 2x more than a standard tube, but last a lot longer. Basically they just have thicker rubber. I used these when I did a paper run as a kid, because we were always banging up and down kerbs and getting punctures. pine-o-cleen (2955)

I need to get a more portable pump anyway, and I think there are some that do either type of valve. The wikipedia article says Presta valves are smaller than standard valves, so does that mean bike wheels have to be specifically designed for one or the other?

I'll look into the "Thorn Proof" tyres

773766 2009-05-14 10:02:00 Hi Grevan..... Cheap? Boy the last thing I would look for a cheap bargain from is a bike innertube. Get the best quality you can or else you'll be repairing the things for ever. In fact, Re: because I have got a few punctures a long walk away from home & it gets very annoying that could be part of your problem. I bike regularly, done the Otago Rail Trail twice in the last two years and can't remember when I last had a puncture. Scouse (83)
773767 2009-05-14 11:10:00 I prefer the Schrader valve, which is the same as used on cars. It's very common, and of course you can use car tyre pumps and petrol station air hoses. Hand pumps are easily obtainable too. The hole in the wheel rim needs to be bigger than for the Presta, but all the rims I've had would accept them.

You got it Gary... they are just the best company that I have ever dealt with online!:thumbs:

Bought a lot of stuff from them for my son (who doesn't have a credit card) over the last year. Usually next day service.

I wish they existed back then too it was always a long ride into town for parts when I lived in England gary67 (56)
