They will oppose police having guns, and when they get a little electric power they complain like little girls. So what are the police supposed to use to defend themselves and members of the public from a nonsensical dangerous guy? |

2009-05-22 05:47:00 | The UN is also jumping up and down about them. I'm quite happy with the current policy on guns (i.e. police don't carry them, but they are available within short notice when necessary), but given the type of criminals they are dealing with these days, pepperspray simply isn't enough. Tasers are a good compromise.

2009-05-22 07:36:00 | As far as I'm concerned Police can (when needed) use a harpoon gun on crims. Or even a cannon! If you give them reason to use it, then you deserve the suffering / injury or death that may follow. They don't use these things without cause. Sadly though, they do seem to use them without accuracy. That time they emptied a handgun trying to stop a dog at point-blank range was a real eye opener. Police 0. Dog 1. Mind you, there'd be a fair bit of adrenalin flowing any time you have to pull a weapon in a public place. There's a lot of factors that have to be considered, particularly where any stray shots may travel to. Try doing all that, staying within the rules, protecting others, avoiding traffic, and looking after your own hide, all while being threatened with lethal force from a crim - whose only concern may be to fire with complete disregard for all consequences.

2009-05-22 08:37:00 | if you taser the wrong guy it sucks to be him. if you shoot the wrong guy he's dead. even the crim's are saying "rather be tasered than shot"

2009-05-22 09:46:00 | UN what a pack of numbnuts how dare they say NZ police carrying tasers is torture when 97% of the world police carry firearms. I would rather be zapped than shot dead with a nice bullet. I have zapped myself a couple of times once with a electric jug and the other with an electric drill in the wet it was not nice but I am still alive to drink rum and one day collect my pension. Getting drilled by a 9mm nice glock bullet in the head doesn't do it for me. I agree with Metla NZ police cant be trusted with ad hoc carrying of guns because when everything turns to guano they do dumb things with them. Off the top of my head 3 examples Shooting dead someone with a golf club at ytra 8 shots at a vicious dog and all missing Shooting a poor courier driver dead who was stopped on the motorway western springs..
