775117 2009-05-19 05:30:00 What are the pros and cons of a 64bit installation of Window? I'd like the best performance possible for my production pc but with as few limitations as possible, ie: software. Once Windows 7 is officially released, I'd like to grab 64bit if it's worth it.

What are your experiences with 64 and 32bit?

775118 2009-05-19 05:35:00 If you keep all your software up to date I would see no problems running 64bit, I have been runing 64bit vista since it come out with no compatibaly issues.

If you want old programs to work you may have to use vmware etc.

I cannot see why you would pick 32bit if 64bit is avaliable.

775119 2009-05-19 05:38:00 The main prob (with 64 bit) maybe drivers. No drivers, no go. So, unless your mobo has got Win7 drivers (Vista x64 drivers may work, when it comes out), nothing will work. Altho, Win7 may have more drivers than XP Pro x64 (which is what I'm using).

And unless youre using 64 bit programs as well, you wont really benefit (since you'll still be using 32 bit programs). And whatever limitations there are using 32 bit programs will apply (if youre running 32 bit programs, in 64 bit windows)

The main thing is you'll be able to get / use more than 4 GB ram, which I'm doing at the mo (I'm using 6 GB, soon to be 8 GB)

775120 2009-05-19 07:30:00 Soooo many threads about this topic:p

Basic Pro/Con:

64bit:
Pros
Can map more than 4gb RAM

Cons
Driver Issues
A few programs don't run within the 32bit emulation layer 64bit Windows provides.

775121 2009-05-19 08:53:00 My printer refused to work on W7 64 bit even with vista 64 bit drivers and neither would my print server so since I am too tight to replace those as well I will be going W7 32bit gary67 (56)
775122 2009-05-19 21:24:00 Oh yes, Printers. Pet hate of mine this lack of drivers for printers.
I had a lovely printer, still do actually. Does 1400 pages per cartridge.
Damn thing will not work with Vista, never mind 64bit Vista. Which is a sad indication of how it will do with 64bit Win7.

I eventually found one with a 64bit Vista driver but you take a look, hardly any have drivers at all.
Why the hell should you have to buy a new printer just because of a driver issue?

Lots of them say Vista will sort the driver itself - wrong, it stuffs it.

Grrrrrr

But I think its time everyone went 64bit. Look at RAM now, DDR3 in Triples now has dropped heaps.
64bit and Core i7. Yay.

775123 2009-05-19 23:06:00 I am currently dual booting Win7 32 and 64 versions with 4 Gig RAM and AMD X2 4400 processor.

There seems to be no real difference when running Flight Sim 9 or when using Office or Corel X2. I timed a batch process in Corel on 535 jpegs and could not measure any difference in speed between the two operating systems.

I have an HP Printer 7260 which won't run under Win 7 either Version but did run under Win XP Pro 64.

This does not worry me at the moment as I also have a Canon IP 4600 which works under all three operating systems.

When Win7 comes out I will be purchasing the 64 bit version as I hear that there is a 64 bit Version of Office in the pipeline and I will bump the RAM up to 8 Gig.

IMHO 64 bit is the way of the future.

No. Of course not.
The O/S doesn't help at all for those.

MS FS needs max CPU, not whatever O/S.

Loads of RAM doesn't help performance much in gaming either. I built one a while back, alsmost identical to mine except he had:
4870, I had 4870x2
He had 8GB DDR2800, I had 2 GB DDR2-667.
Same CPU, he had Vista 64bit, I had XP 32bit.

I beat the pants off him in 3D MArk.

Hmm my IP3000 refused to work on W7 64bit even with the Vista 64 bit drivers but works fine on W7 32 bit as does my print server so unless Canon can gurantee my printer will work on W7 64 bit I won't be buying that version

3D mark does not help in my opinion. Does 3D mark give you a performance for running either version of Flight Sim?

So if you want max performance in MS Flight Sim have you tested actual frame rates and other add ons. Did you actually play the game like either FS 2004 or FSX. If so did you put everything on high and add realism and real world and other aircraft?
