867082 2010-03-14 06:01:00 Hi
We have a telecom broadband connection which has one hardwired outlet to connect into the back of a desktop computer. We also have a number of laptops we want to run wireless.

We purchased a D-Link DIR-300 last week from DSL. Have brought it home and connected as per instructions and loaded above software (the power was left off until software loaded). Worked through the above software ok , loading in passwords and selecting WAP until last section which is labelled Configure Network.

The software says it is Configuring router (I thought this was done in a previous section) goes away for a very long time, and then comes back with a screen which says "Router setup requires your new router to be configured with the default user name and password"

Why would it say this we have filled in our own specific names in the previous section which the software accepted and stored?

The interesting thing is that the wirelss system works but there is no security

Also the last screen says refer to the Manual on how to resent the router. I cannot find this in the manual but have pushed a manual reset button on the back of the router, and then follwed the instructions again but we always get back to this screen

Have rung the help ph line but have been told we have to pay $40. Not iclined to do this as we are computer literate and i can't see any way where we have not connected or followed the software instructions.

Plse help

867084 2010-03-14 11:09:00 I'm on a cable broadband connection so my knowledge of ADSL is a bit limited but I'm sure I read somewhere that the ADSL modems used by Telecom have a DHCP server even tho' they have only 1 LAN port. Since you can have only one DHCP server on a network it means you have to connect your DIR 300 as a wireless access point rather than a router. The instructions for this are in section 2 of the DIR 300 manual entitled Connecting to another Router.
Perhaps someone with more experience with ADSL can confirm or deny this theory. I do know that seperate wireless routers never sit well with ADSL modems and that traditional wisdom recommends combined ADSL modem/routers with wireless capability.

Xtra - New Zealand
Xtra in New Zealand requires PPPoA connection with PAP authentication. You need to make sure that your ADSL modem supports PPPoA (PPPoA can not be used on Routers which do not have ADSL Modem built-in). If your DSL modem will be carrying out PPPoA connection you need to set your router's WAN (INTERNET) port to Dynamic IP (DHCP) option.

Make sure you get the modem going when it is connected directly to the PC. Then connect the modem to the WAN (INTERNET) port of the router and configure the router's WAN (INTERNET) port with 'DHCP' option.

Configuration steps:

Step 1 Connect the broadband modem to the WAN (INTERNET) port of your router. If the modem has USB connection make sure that it is NOT connected to any computers via the USB cable and that the modem is switched to Ethernet (not USB). Only the modem's Ethernet port should be connected to the router's WAN (INTERNET) port.
Connect your computer(s) to the router's LAN port(s) or establish connection to it wirelessly.

Step 2 Open your Internet Explorer and log into your router by typing in its IP address (in most cases the default IP is http://192.168.0.1 ). Note that you do not have to be on the Internet in order to access this address because you are just connecting to your router's address. Specify username and password for your router, the default is `admin' (optional) and password is blank (nothing).

Step 3 After logging into the router select Setup and then click on WAN (INTERNET) button. Select the 'DHCP' option in your router.

Step 4 Click on SAVE SETTINGS and then on REBOOT THE DEVICE to apply the new configuration. Recycle power to modem.

You do not have to run any login client (like PPPoE) on your computer in order to connect to the Internet. If you had it setup when using the modem without the router, disable it in Internet Explorer under Tools > Internet Options > Connections > set to 'Never dial a connection'.

If you did not have to run a PPP login client on your computer when modem was directly connected to your PC, your ADSL modem has PPP built-in. In this case set the router's WAN (INTERNET) port should be set to the 'Dynamic IP' option.

If you are having difficulties accessing the Internet:

- Turn the modem and the router off for a minute and then turn the modem first and then the router.

- Log into the router and go to Status page. Note what IP address it is getting on the WAN (INTERNET) interface. If the IP address you see under WAN (INTERNET) appears to be in the same range you are using on your network (e.g. 192.168.0.x), you will need to change the range you are using on your LAN to something different, e.g. 192.168.88.x. You can do this on your router under Setup > LAN Setup. Note that after changing the IP of your router you will only be able to access it through its new IP, e.g. 192.168.88.1.

- Select the MAC Cloning option. Click on Clone MAC Address button. Do this from the computer which the broadband modem was directly connected to the last time. This will place the MAC address of your computer into the router. Save settings and reboot the router. Reboot your broadband modem as well.

- Uninstall your antivirus software (sometimes disabling or closing the software is not enough) and reboot your PC.
