866119 2010-03-11 08:57:00 This may be a silly question, but I occasionally see reference to this item to be used to boot from & thought it might be a handy thing to have. I have googled it & there seems to be a veriety, but what am actually looking for? Driftwood (5551)
866120 2010-03-11 08:59:00 A Linux livecd is basically an entire Linux system that runs from a CD and doesn't require installing to your HDD. It doesn't touch your existing setup (unless you ask it to), and will leave no traces after you reboot.

As far as which one to recommend - what are you wanting to achieve with it? That has a big bearing on which one you should use.

866121 2010-03-11 09:02:00 What do you wish to achieve?
A system rescue?
An alternative to Windows?
A diagnostic tool?

866122 2010-03-11 09:34:00 Also your hardware is a factor too.

Ubuntu 9.10 Live will NOT run well on a 350Mhz Pentium II - but Puppy Linux will...

Funny that. Sometimes I find they already have a Puppy with teeth.

866128 2010-03-11 22:01:00 That's it, it is not a silly question.
The sheer number of Linux distributions
is mind boggling.

+1 for Puppy Linux.
It's simpler than most
and runs well as a live CD
because it loads completely into RAM at start-up
(if you have 256MB of RAM)
